Excaliber with 15" WOT coil

Hi! I've been reading everything I can get my hands on written by Clive Clynick with regards to water hunting. In several of his books he mentions some very successful water hunters who have modified their Excalibers with the 15" WOT coils and have had extraordinary results. Is anyone using these and what has been your experience? Any helpful tips or advice? Thanks!

I have been using the WOT coil for almost 2 years.

Here is what I have found:

The WOT is not 15 inches. It is 14.5 inches in diameter.

The coverage on the WOT is excellent. The WOT weighs in a just a tad heavier than the stock 10 inch coil. Some people complain about the weight. I have not found it a problem swinging the WOT compared to the standard 10 inch coil.

The WOT can be a bit finicky in really trashy or highly mineralized areas. The WOT is excellent for open fields. Not so good in high weeds or woods. It's just too big to maneuver in those areas.

The WOT, at least for me, does go deeper. I have proved that to myself in air testing, in my coin garden and in the field. A silver quarter down 10 inches in my test garden does not register with the stock 10 inch coil. The WOT has no trouble detecting it in discriminate or in pin point.

The WOT can work at the highest sensitivity if there is no RFI present. I often run mine at 8 to 10 on sensitivity. If I get into RFI problems, which with my other older blue Excalibur that I had, I backed it down a bit. With the newer Excalibur II, shielding is better and I have yet to run into RFI problems.

Some people complain about running the WOT in the water. Too much resistance they say. Some complain about the standard 10 inch coil. I have not had a problem with that. I am in very good shape for being almost 55 and I have no problems swinging the WOT in the water. YEs it slows me down a bit but that can be a good thing. I don't miss much when I slow it down a little.

Get the waterproof mini buccaneer connectors and you'll have a choice of coils to run if the WOT won't work.

The WOT is a great coil. I have found more stuff that I know I would never have found if I did not have it. It does work for me.

That set up sounds great
Sometimes waving a 10" coil over our massively wide and long beaches seems a like trying to find a needle in a haystack
I am a big fan of the WOT
I only used one once for 10 mins on a mates Sov. GT and picked up a lovely 1862 Token. :) beginners luck !

Can you please tell me more about the waterproof connectors ? ( who, where, how much.)
So with these, you can easily swap from 10" to 15" coils yourself right ?
thanks

Thanks to OldBeechnut for the links for the waterproof connectors. I did use the glass ones that are from the company but they did not work as well as the Mini Buccaneers.

Yep. You can switch out a coil in about two or three minutes with them.

Thank you very much for your time and info.

I assume you mean when compared to the old 10" BBS coil, because the WOT is the heaviest coil out there and is close in weight to the 10" BBS coil, both of which are much heavier than the newer 10" Tornado.

Coverage is important on the beach for sure. Some might even feel coverage is more important than depth, though the WOT and 15x12 appear to get deeper in the sand then the stock coil. I would consider the SEF 15x12 as well because it's newer technology. I owned one and it's stability is outstanding and it got very deep in the sand...deeper than stock, although it didn't get as deep on land than the stock coil. I now have a 12x10 and it appears deeper on land than stock or the 15x12, probably because it sees less ground than the 15x12. Coverage is still better than stock and it's lighter than an S-12. The 15x12 was too much drag in the water for my tastes. Haven't tried the 12x10 in the water yet but I'm sure it will be fine drag wise.

Posted below is a coil weight chart I put together and here is a link to more info on that...The 15x12 is much lighter than the WOT and even lighter than the 10" Tornado if you use spray on liner.

Hmmm...only a 3 ounce difference between the 15 x 12 SEF and the WOT.

The weight does not bother me much as I can swing my WOT easily. Myabe when I get older it may become a problem but then again who knows.

I thank you CritterHunter for your posts on the SEF. I am going to get one and try it out. I've been using the WOT's for a number of years and it is the one coil I really like. I've had a ton of other coils but the WOT and I just seem to mesh.

I hunt mainly the water and have found that the size of the WOT is not a problem for me. The WOT is .625 inches thick x 14.25 wide and to me glides through the water rather easily. It may be too that I don't have girly arms!

I just gotta say it ..... 3 OUNCES give me a break I am 71, hunt the WOT/excal exclusively in the water 4-5 hours a day 4-6 days a week weather permitting and don't work up a sweat. Maybe when I get older it may become a problem:clapping: but when I have to worry about 3 ounces I will take up knitting:rofl:

Hi T59
You can buy a WOT from :coiltec: for the Excalibur that comes with the water proof connector with a bit of soldering you can change between the WOT and the 10". I run the WOT on the beach or in still water and the 10" in surf as the WOT tends to have to much drag

Cheers Ron:ausflag:

Ummmm....take a closer look at the chart. The WOT is the 4.2 ounces heavier without coil covers. Spray on liner is the only way to fly. Far less hassle and weight. The FBS coils listed are heavier than Sovereign versions, as noted. Don't mix them up.

4.2oz is over 1/4th a pound at the end of the shaft and that will wear on anybody after a long day.

THAT'S IT!!!!!...the reason I can hunt so long with my excal/WOT is because I use bedliner spray on the coil Never would be able to handle the whole 4.2 OZ's:rofl::rofl:

Think of how much more spry you'd feel if you used the lighter 15x12. :detecting:

Use 10 x 14's on Infinium and Sea Hunter MK2 They all swing the same in the water for me and all mounted on my straight aluminum shafts:biggrin::coiltec:

Hi Been folowing the threads...so how many pins do you need on the plugs and sockets if you want to interchange coils and what type/number of Bulgin
Thanks
