Excaliber Pinpoint/Disc question:ausflag:

Tony

I finally did my own checks on the Pinpoint/DISC depth debate...this was after reading a lot of threads on the subject.
Well to my surprise, I found that Pinpoint was about 20% deeper on all targets compared to DISC. For some reason, I thought DISC was deeper.

Is there a chance that different Excal users could find the results reversed ?

Also, for those that operate in Pinpoint and then flick to DISC for a quick ID...have you had any mechanical problems with wear and tear on the control by continuously flicking between modes ?

Thanks for any replies,
Regards,
Tony :ausflag:

Disc was 25% deeper than pinpoint. GH and I discussed this as he is a big proponent of pinpoint hunting and we decided it had more to do with our mineralization levels than anything else. I have virtually no mineralization in Bermuda where as GH is thick with blacksand in Galveston, Texas.
We could be wrong of course but those were our findings.

Cheers,

It's location dependent.

Also......don't try to determine this on freshly buried targets. The results don't match actual hunting conditions.

Hey Tony, I run in pinpoint and click over to check for ferrous null. I dig everything, unless it goes completely silent on disc. You will be amazed what you scoop up, despite not having a clear tone in disc. I have experienced no failure of the disc knob, but have only been using it that way for a while. Have owned the 1000 since Jan.'06. Have highly mineralized surf here in Galveston and cannot get reasonable stability in disc. I can hear whispers in pinpoint that simply cannot be heard in disc or appear garbled. I set my discrimination knob to 1, volume at about 11 or 12. Threshold to just above silent and sensitivity starting around 11, but if the high pitched humm occurs, then I back off to 12 or maybe 1. When the high pitched humm occurs, then the unit is not dealing well with the ground and it is losing depth. I believe that I am finding greater quantity and deeper targets than in disc. It may just be my area though. I'm sure there are exceptions and I am always learning something new about this unit. I'll be running in pinpoint-I like it!

Thanks Gulfhunter,

I will experiment when I get out next. Local beaches here don't show up much black sand so conditions must play a large part in things.

My settings mirror yours....I always let the audio feedback tell me how to set up the Excal. I do tend to be a bit greedy with the SENS but now back off if any falsing occurs.

Thanks again for the info....

Tony.

I just posted some information at 10.15 P M -- August 9, 2006 I believe on my misfortune on pinpoint or Discriminate setting

You had me confused for a moment......you are talking about your post in a different thread, right?

Never heard of non-operation of disc control before. Can't be that common.

It is said that if you minimize your sensitivity all the way clockwise you may get greater depth. Quote by Kevin Reilly in Andy S's book. I also search S Florida where people claim this but have not experienced the same results. Anybody else ever try this?

It's a common thing for me to some extent.......

In places I can run at or near max sensitivity, I get better depth, stronger cleaner hits, and better meter readings by running at 11 or 12 o'clock depending on which Sov. Too high sensitivity makes them work poorly.

The improvement is considerable. Your location........can't say.

HH

For the Excal... I believe if you turn sensitivity all the way clockwise as the quote states it is in the extreme minimum mode.

Don't have the Excal to look at.....

My Sovs are minimum at full clockwise. Max is full left just before auto detent.

The story in Andy's book is an example of how you can do something right, or at least better, because you didn't read the book for the detector.

Find any weak nonferrous hit.
Play with the sensitivity to get the strongest signal.
Lift the coil as much as possible while playing with the sensitivity control until you find the setting that will let you lift it the highest.
Hunt with that setting if it is stable. If not then back down just enough to smooth it out.

Just might surprise you.

Thanx for the info ..... i'm gonna try it this week end. by the NWOH I'm from Port Clinton...where you at?
