Excaliber, a brand new start.

I'm in detector overload lately trying to decide which water detector to buy, reading reviews, talking with friends. Something about that reminds me of buying a computer and trying to decide what to include and what not too.

I've pretty much decided on the Excaliber, and now I'm trying to decide:

- which coil (800 or 1000)
- 3rd party headphones (if possible) or the Minelab upgraded ones
- which 3rd party shaft
- which scoop

I understand it will be different if I'm in the sand or in the water. I'll probably wade chest deep at times.

I'm wondering what do you do with your wallet (has TVA permit in it) vehicle keys (has electronic entry fob) and finds. What all should you carry with you? I understand that in Florida you sometimes have to park quite a way from the beach.

Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

I have the 1000 like the extra coverage. Bought a florida straight shaft that works great. Have a large stainless steel scoop that works well. Bought a small otter box that holds my documents and truck keys. Just go for it, you will not be sorry.

We made our own pouches and straight shafts. I would go for the 1000. My dad has the 1000, and my brother and me have the 800. I think he may get a tiny amount more depth, but he covers more ground. I dont know much about the headphones. I heard the Grey Ghosts are pretty good. Maybe you should bring a nalgene bottle with you with something to drink in it. If you hunt along time, you may get thirsty. Here is a picture of the pouch i made. Quite simple, just use some plastic mesh material, and sew it up. I made it when i had the HH Pulse. The small pouch was for the coins and other "good" items. The big compartment for the trash. Now that i have the Excalibur, i dont even bring the small compartment. I always put the jewelry and other better finds in my pocket, or on chain around my neck. HH

P.S. If you want the plans to make your own shaft, just send me a pm.

I wasn't really planning on making a shaft but buying one others had good luck with. Same with the scoop. Someone mentioned the one with non-slip rubber on the back to push with.

Thanks again

I think with the larger coil your going to get that little bit more depth to it....and I also have my TVA permit in my wallet...Wifes parents live just outside Chatanooga and we go down one or twice a year...can't wait for the snow to melt so that I can swing my new excal!!:clapping:

Which coil: 1000 is good for coverage

Headphones: You can have them changed out with Gray Ghost

Which 3rd party shaft and scoop- http://demarcodetectorsales.com/html/Newprod/NewProducts.html

Hope this help

I solved the problem by getting the 1000 for wading and the 800 for diving and made my own straight shaft. You can get the correct aluminum tubing from aircraft spruce and save some $$

I have the 800 coil but use a Sovereign with a larger coil when I'm not in the water. The Florida Straight Shaft that is sold on eBay is great. It lets you swing all day. I think he's running a $10 off sale right now. I also use an Otter Box for keeping papers dry. They come in different sizes. The small one will hold your keys, cash, and some credit cards. Larger ones will hold your wallet. ~John
