Excaliber 2 for Land Hunting???

desmond

New member
Just happened to be looking at my manual again and noticed Minelab describes the Excaliber 2 as both a land and water machine, land meaning not just beach. Has anyone ever hunted with the Excaliber for coins on dry land? Hard to believe the machine would be productive for this kind of hunting. Des Curran in Buffalo

It can be used under those conditions, Problem is: Hope you dont damage anything while doing it.

Just a coil replacement will cost you $445.00. So, I would not recommend It for Away from the beach.

You can land hunt as you call it,, with the excalibur, I use it on a sovereign gt straight stem , hip mounted !! proper hip mount makes it comfortable, it will perform as good as a Sovereign, the only advantage to using it on land is when its raining then at least you can keep detecting, whats not good is the headphones when its windy and your detecting in to the wind ,, and its the same on the beach,to much ambient noise , yeah I have put tape over the holes on each side, still noisy.
In conclusion the Excalibur is just a Sovereign in a tube, Garretts new machine which is submersible, is a good innovation ,shame Minelab don't follow with a land machine that you don't have to cover with a plastic bag when its raining hard, even when you cover it the condensation will get inside,, all that money ant it ain't waterproof, I may take a look at the Garrett..

much like the sov gt i use my excal-1000 at old colonial sites that were torn down long before the invention of aluminum.....for some reason i find the excal actually slightly better than the gt ....... it just seems like the old excal-1000 give a crisper signal at a slower sweep speed than my sov gt....this helps with target seperation......excal and gt hit on alot of the low tone flat buttons that other machines struggle with all the while nulling most iron and nails......

I have a ML SE built like a tank.... i guess im hard on a machine, but with all the banging the Xcal seems a little fragile to me. Like was mentioned .... pretty expensive to fix a coil, aint like buying a new one and plug and go. Not to mention..... Xcals aint cheap.

The Excalibur works just fine on land. Not sure how one would break a coil?

One could if one was not careful couldn't one!! its not rocket science to change coils on excaliburs or indeed the head phones in line marine dive quality connectors , its a bit of a palaver to do though .

Not sure why you would think it would not be productive using an Excalibur for land hunting. I use mine a lot on land and it is the cat's butt! It can detect as good as an E-trac in many cases. I've owned both and the Excalibur is an excellent land detector.

Damaging a coil is pretty tough to do. You could bang it against a rock and it may crack...but you would have to purposely hit it pretty hard to damage it.

I run an Excalibur II with a WOT coil, remote pin point / discriminate switch and switched out the battery to a 1600 MAH NIMH. It has a home made straight shaft with one of Pluggers shaft locks. I also use waterproof ear buds inside of Peltor Optime 98 ear muffs. Going to install a Doc's Treasure amp very soon.
I used it more than the E-trac so I sold the E-trac as I wanted to stay sharp with the Excalibur for water and beach hunting. It is as deep as anything I've tried. I've owned a lot of top of the line detectors and the Excalibur is the one I kept.

The best way to find out for yourself is to use it on land!

Wow. Thanks Findskeeper. I have a 10 inch coil that came with the xcal 2. Always had Whites, so just learning. Found some nice rings this summer by Buffalo NY standards. What is the WOT coil? Also, what is the 1600 MAH NIMH battery? And you do use the machine in pinpoint. I don't in the water as I've been told you don't go as deep in pin-point. Maybe you could PM me? Des in Buffalo
