Excaliber 11 with 8" coil

Just upgraded to a new Excaliber 11 with an 8" coil. I previously had the original Excaliber with the 10" coil, but was about 10-11 yrs. old. I just recently read Clive's new book on shoreline hunting with the Excaliber. In the book he said the coil of choice of the pros now in the Carribean is the 8". Less interference and able to use more sensitivity and hits harder on small gold. Anybody currently using the Excaliber with the 8' coil and what are your experinces?

I also read Clive's book, the 8'' coil cleans up on all the loot the big coils left behind ? .........I was thinking on getting one for my GT and giving it try?

The Excal II that I ordered is with the 8" coil. I like smaller coils for those very reasons listed but I've not got the Excal in yet. On other machines though it makes a world of diff. I favor 5" to 8" coils over their big brothers.

I have had both for a few months now using them in Texas Lakes, East Coast Florida, and now Lake Michigan. Excal 2 800 and Excal 2 1000. (A few years ago I had an Identical 1000 which I used for a couple of years) Both air test between 7 and 8 inches in Disc on all coins. Both did 7 on the penny, and 8 on the Quarter. One was hotter on the dime, one was SLIGHTLY hotter on the nickel. Is this representative of what they will do in the ground - no. Is it relative to each other - yes. I do not think the difference in depth is relative to the coil size. In other words, the 10 (1000) isn't 2 1/2 inches deeper than the 7 1/2 (800) coil. I have my suspicions that the smaller coil is just as deep as the bigger one, but some in the know disagree with me. What it comes down to is this: for small swimming areas and anywhere there is trash, I like the 800. The sounds are sharper and more definative of the target. It is easier to swing in the water. It was my favorite until I got to a HUGE beach where I had to cover a large area in a limited time. Then I learned to like the 1000 more. The sounds of high conductors seem to be more faint, so you have to pay more attention. It might go deeper, but i'm not sure. Haven't done any in-ground tests. I was going to convert my 1000 to another 800 but now I think I will save it for when its needed. But my favorite is that little 800 coil. Its just a joy to use.

Good Luck

Why be satisfied with only one coil? Get the waterproof connectors and have the ability to use a larger coil for better coverage and a smaller coil when needed. Why be pigeonholed by the factory when you can have whatever you need whenever you need it?

I've had my Excal II for about 4 months, and I have found Gold rings with diamonds, wedding bands with diamonds, ear rings with diamonds, cell phones, everything under the sun, accept that elusive gold doubloon on the treasure coast of Florida. I just sprained my ankle Saturday evening otherwise I would be out on the beach somewhere near Cape Canaveral to Sebastian Inlet. I am very satisfied with my Excalibur II. As for depth- pennies at 7-10 inches, dimes 7-10 inches- nickels 7-10 inches, Quarters 12+, beer cans 2 feet. I operate on Disc not PP I can hear my tones much better. Some of these coins were probably deeper and some on or near the surface. The rings and earrings were from 5-6 inches with a good sound.
Happy Hunting

Thanks for your responses. I mostly use the excelerator 6" inch coil on my E-trac although I bought a Sunray 8" for coverage and my jewelry finds have exploded using the smaller coil. I did try my Excaliber with the 8' today on 4 different beach sites & 3 different lakes but was only able to find some clad coins and 2 junk bracelets. I was happy with the weight and the sounds. I guess you can't find it if it's not there. Will update you as I go forward.

That is a great suggestion & I was going to do just that, I still am a little concerned about how difficult it is to do as I don't want to ruin my detector.Have you done that to yours & if so is it fairly easy? Thanks

This past week I used both of my excal which have the Bulgins in fairly ruff waters, Gotta say they worked great..but one of the excal started getting touchy after 2 days. If I bumped the connector it would false. Got it back to the hotel, was able to let it dry out for one day and wrapped it with some silicon tape, resue tape, problem solved the next few outings. Other detector was fine and took a beating. I think that I may have to take them apart and do a little bit better job on the sealing. Like coating the insides/filling with Aquaseal, or RTV silicon, then assemble. If I was using these detectors underwater for any amount of time....I do think in time they would have some issues.

I have an Excal ll 1000, and like the idea of installing waterproof connectors so I can also use the 8" coil. Does anyone know of a detector shop that installs the conectors, and can also sell me an 8" coil with a connector? Thanks,

Well I guess no response to the above question means "NO". Sounds like a good business for someone to get into. I did find under the Modifications Forum posted by: timmysys, where he did the mod himself. I like the idea, but would feel safer to find a waterproof (O-Ring) stainless connector to do the job if possible.

The Coiltek WP connector is going on its 3rd year, hunted almost every day and so far has not had a leak (must have been installed correctly) . Mostly hunted with a WOT but I think everyone should use an 8 inch coil :clapping:
