Excal tones

Should the excal II and blue excal tones be about the same? My hunting partner bought a nice used blue excal in excellent condition with the horseshoe type 8" coil. He used it today and it works great but he said the tones seem to sound all the same on coins, pulltabs and rings. I thought it was a multi tone. After using it some more he said you have to pay close attention and that you can tell the changes in tones but it is not as pronounced as the excal II. Is this normal? BTW, this 8" coil is alot heavier than my 10" coil on my excal II. thanks....HH

He is correct. The Blues take a little more time than even the Xcal II to learn the pitch hold tone changes. The lower tones on the blue arent quite as seperated as on the Xcal two as well.... much like the Sov to me. At least on the Sov we have a way to adjust the tones to better suit your hearing. BUT... i dig everything but a shallow bottle cap in disc anyway. The Blue also seems a little more affected by the threshold. To low and the targets break up a bit.... get that nice little buzz in your ear thou and they seem to come thru clearer.

what you said, he was worried something was wrong, much appreciated, this old blue is in immaculate condition...... John

On the Sov you can adjust the pitch of the tones but I never new you could adjust the variability with the tones. Am I reading what your saying correctly dew? How do you make that adjustment?
When I adjusted the tones on Sovs in the past, say making a pulltab or nickel to have more of a growl, that would also pull down the pitch of the coins and they would not ring so high. Is there another adjustment?

No Neil, Just the two inside the box. Like you i used the adjustment to play around with mid to lower tones. It does raise or lower the pitch hold like you said. But that simple adjustment allows me to get close to what the Xcal tones are..... it was just easier for me. I may have said it wrong, im certainly not the expert on the Sov.

Those Blues are super good and RELIABLE machines. Tell him if the cable seems stiff.... make sure he tapes it very close to the coil. If he does it to high up, the coil vibrates in the water as it moves extremely fast..... that can cause the cable to crack.
