Excal tones

Should the excal II and blue excal tones be about the same? My hunting partner bought a nice used blue excal in excellent condition with the horseshoe type 8" coil. He used it today and it works great but he said the tones seem to sound all the same on coins, pulltabs and rings. I thought it was a multi tone. After using it some more he said you have to pay close attention and that you can tell the changes in tones but it is not as pronounced as the excal II. Is this normal? BTW, this 8" coil is alot heavier than the excal II coil, it's heavier than my 10" coil on my excal II. thanks....HH
