Excal threshold instability sounds after charging.

Hello guys. I've been at this for many years but this one has me stumped. I recharged the NIMH pak battery for 12 hours, and now the thresold won't remain stable. All controls are same place and changing them doesn't help. Mot near any metal, nor moving the coil wire. Just chirps while remaing still. Everything was fine till I charged battery. Detector is about four yrs. old and never any trouble. Any ideas?

If you have a voltmeter, measure the voltage of your battery pack (pod??) and see what you get. If you have lost a cell or two, it would act like you need a recharge.

Thanks Art. I do think my charger is bad. What voltage do I need on a NIMH or regular pak?

You need to see at least 12 volts. Don't matter if the pack is ni-mh or ni-cd. Still need 12 volts.

The detector will crap out somewhere around 9.5 so a couple cells that have gone bad will put you out of the game.

Hi Sandman,
The same thing happened to me awhile back. It was caused by a bad battery charger. The charger was only putting out 9.5 volts.

Do you have a coil cover on your Coil? If so is it sealed ? If not check to see if you may have got some Black sand in between the coil and the cover.
I went thur this when I fist went out with the excalibur and I thought I had a bad metal detector. But after I removed the coil cover it worked fine. Now I have a coil cover sealed to the coil.

Hi Sandman thought I would have a look on this forum for a change, have you found your answer to you noises, I think it is related to battery some how. If your battery is a Nimh type they are not avaliable in Australia for the Excalibur who makes them over there and how much are they compared to the original Nicad type curious seeya Neilo.:detecting:

I think I found the problem. On removing the sealed coil cover there was no black sand, but there was water and regular sand that got in some how. There was also a small hole in the bottom of the coil like a bubble in the plastic broke.

The NIMH battery I have is made by Sun Ray. I checked their web site and it is not listed anymore. I had it about five years and don't remember what I paid.

Sounds like the battery died. Low battery charge is most likely the cause. either a dead battery of charger.
