EXCAL SETTINGS

Well I'll give you the ones that work for me, in Galveston's salt water. I agonized over Excal settings my 1st season and these work. They are not my own ideas, but from cjc and lemme tell ya, they work, VERY WELL!

Lets start at the top. I use Disc, instead of Pinpoint. Have tried both and have had weak signals in Disc and it does not pick up in Pinpoint, so I feel it is deeper seeking and of course ferrous iron is discriminated. I will save the Threshold for last, as I feel it is MOST important. I run the volume wide open, as sometimes I dive down to retrieve a target and get water in the headphones. Whatever is comfortable for you will work here, but as loud as you can stand. Sensitivity stays on 11 for me and hardly ever has to be altered. 12 would be OK too, but not Auto. I would not push this much lower than 11, because when you push it too low on Sensitivity, you will lose depth, according to cjc. Discrimination is easy, it stays on 1. It NEVER moves again, that is if you like to find gold. Threshold has been a controversial topic on this forum and it seems some of the SOV users do not agree, but that is why SOV/Excal should be separate forums. The units have evolved into different units and what works for some is not best for the other. I go out in the water at the depth I believe to be my starting point, turn the unit on and turn the Threshold to barely audible and then down to no longer audible. If the Threshold tone breaks over the silence, then you may still be set too high.

Do these settings work or am I just a bag of wind? I'll let you decide. Last night's hunt from the mine. OBTW, that is gold ring #31 for 2007.

GH, I put the sensitivity in AUTO, is that a bad idea in fresh water? I left the volume in max but, now will try with a silent threshold.

I believe you will do better OUT of Auto Bruce. Hard to argue with my results. I have been running at 11 o'clock and the unit is stable and deep seeking. Have hit on some fine deep gold. Sensitivity is incredible, as the unit even signalled a fine 18K gold chain(no pendant, charm or medallion), as a broken low-tone!
