Excal Settings & Info?

Sand Scoop

New member
I've owned a GT for about 2 years and since I'm close to th beach I go out almost daily and have learned the different tones of whats buried under the sand. Wanting to get out into the deeper areas I ordered an Excal II. I could tell most of the time a Tab with the GT but with the Excal the tones are so much different than the GT. To these old ears a penny has the same tone as a tab and a quarter has its own tone not anything like the GT. I was having some trouble setting the Threshold but the more I get out just like the GT the better I get with the Excal. I've read everything I can find on using the Excal but am still looking for more info from anyone who can help me.

I just got my Excal II also but havent had it to the beach yet. Ive been mostly hunting with a GT and a Xterra 70. I would just set the threshold to a light hum, keep the disc turned all the way down and set the sens low and experiment with different sens settings on various targets you find. I like a low sens setting on my GT. Usually waterproof headphones are a little tintier sounding, they dont sound as good as some good land headphones. I can tell the tone difference between a tab and coin easy enough on my GT also.

I bought the Advanced Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Minelab Excalibur by Clive J. Clynick
Its an excellent read on the excal lots of tips and easy to understand. Dan

Just takes some time to get used to the tones on the Excalibur as the headphones like Neil says are different then those you probably use on the GT. On the penny different tone than the quarter you probably tested a new zinc penny which will be different tone than a quarter and close to that of some pull tabs. Try it with a older copper penny and it should sound like a quarter.
Good luck and keep us informed on how this new Excalibur II will work for you,

Rick

After using the Excalibur for a little over 2 years, I have just purchased a GT and I am learning it's tones. So far it's great. This picture was the first 1/2 hour of use and dug very little trash. If it will sound off on gold as it did these silver targets it will be a killer machine.

On the Excal. the tones are a little different, but not much. To learn the tones I have found that laying a 2 x 4 in a clean area of the yard and placing 18 to 24 inches apart, the most common beach targets along with a gold ring or two and listen to what each tone sounds like over and over will really help in leaning the tones without so much digging. Also do your sweeps in both direction of the test targets to where you can learn how a tab is a little longer in one direction, versus a ring is round sounding in both directions.

Another trick that was taught to me is to place a zinc penny in my left dive boot that I wear and use that to check the tone of what sounds like a penny in the water. If the tone in the water sounds just like the one in my left foot, I move on if I am short on time. I also use the left boot penny to get my threshold back after after getting the "iron buzz" instead of waiting for the threshold to come back which can sometimes take a minute with the sensitivity cranked up.

I always dig large unusual targets in the water as you never know when it's a watch. Most of the times it is fishing tackle, but you never know when it's going to be that Rolex.

I hope you enjoy the Excalibur as much as I do mine.

That is one of the best tricks taught to me on the Excal is the penny inside your shoe or boot.

iv had 2 GT's and 2 Excals and the GT is way deeper in salt sand and the tones for each item were the same every time, where the Excal's pull tab was high tone most of the time and low tons sometimes. GT was far better in salt sand.

Well Sand Scoop, if you have not read cjc's, "Advanced Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Minelab Excaliber", read that, as it is a wealth of information, just PM cjc and he'll get a copy out to ya. I will tell you how I'm set up, but it will be slightly different on your unit, as the knob selections have been revised on the Excal II. On my Excal I 1000, here is how I am setup. Discrimination on 1, this NEVER moves. It is the lowest setting and this is the only way to use this knob, that is, if you like gold. I run in Disc, as opposed to Pinpoint and Volume usually wide open. The Sensitivity knob on my unit is in the 11 o'clock position(this may be different on your unit). The Threshold is the knob of controversy. MOST will tell you to set it to barely audible. In my opinion and cjc's, this is too high. The Threshold rises irratically in this position and you will miss the subtle whispers, which cannot be heard over all the static. I set mine to barely audible and then down to NO LONGER audible. If the Threshold tone breaks over the silence you are still set too high. This setting may need to be periodically checked during the hunt, as you move out into deeper water or current/waves. I ASSURE you, that if you go over a non-ferrous target, you WILL get tone. Check it out mate, it works!

there are many many gold rings around made out of much copper and read just like pennies..................stamped 14K...................those Art Carved rings are a good examle of this

when i had my waterproof explorer i found two and both times they read as pennies..........................so i blanked out pennies and it would not read those two art carved rings at all.

i hate pennies more than anyone, but i love gold ....................u must dig those bastards

just passsing this along

The ONLY time I will skip the exact match of the penny signal in my boot, is if I am REAL short on time. Other wise I also dig them. However I do skip most of the scratch signals of a corroded zinc penny and they corrode pretty fast in our warm FL water.

Sorry I missed meeting you while I was in VA. Beach this fall. I did meet Big Scoop Rich, Wes Beach, Sarge, VA. Beach Ron and a few others. What a great group of guys! Your gold was safe, I did take any, just a few silvers with all the sand you had up there.

After reading CJC book twice, I was guilty of hunting with an audible threshold. I started dropping the TH down below audible and what a difference it does make.

Where can I find the book from cjc? I just got my Excal1000 early xmas from the wife. I thought she was buying another brand but said to go with the best! Gotta love em'!

Hey Sand Scoop, You can also pick up that book from some of our other sponsors, here in the U.S., I think the shipping will be cheaper. Ronny Dugger at Ron's
Dixie Metal Detectors in Miss. has CJC's Books, that is where I got mine. It's especially easier if you don't want to pay via PayPal, that way you can send him a
Postal M.O. or MAYBE a personal check, and Not Have to WORRY About CANADIAN CONVERSION RATE of the money factor!! Hope this helps, Les Robinson
