Excal rechargeable replacements.

Here's one to mull a bit. If NiMh rechargables are NOT sufficient for our Excal's packs... and at 9.6V they certainly aren't. What type cells come in a stock rechargeable pack.? It appears to me that there are only 4 cells in my two stock packs and questioning the dude at the Batteries-Plus store suggests that these are lithium ion rechargeables. However, Minelab's describes them as NiMh. If there are but 4 cells in these packs then they must produce a minimum of 3+ volts apiece to properly operate the machine.
Batteries-Plus isn't able to replace these cells in our packs for some reason. Do any of you other Excal users have experience with replacement of this pack OTHER than ordering one from Minelab? I would like to hear from anyone who knows who or how to accomplish this. I don't necessarily desire to avoid purchasing from Minelab as much as I am curious about the existence of another avenue.
Thanks.
Jim

Got mine at Only Battery Packs and followed their printed sheet for changing instructions. No complaints. Same as previous poster. Jim

Jim this is what i got with instructions on how to switch them out. they work great last about 12 hrs. on 15 hr. charge with the excal stock charger. I am useing them in my Excal. 1000 for about 3 months and no problems.

Good luck. HH

you guys have info on how to reliably reseal the plastic cylinder? I don't dive but if someone has a plan here I'd like to hear about it.
Thanks,
Jim

I took apart the Nicad pod, the only difference between it and the alk pod was the tape on the outside of the pod case at the case and connector junction. I sealed one of my pods with silicone and left the other alone. No problems, but I don't dive.

The excaliber battery pod isn't long enough to fit the batteries into it that Battery's plus puts in there. The pod is about a half inch to short. If you can find yourself an old Sunray 30 hr. NIMH battery pod the batteries at Battery Plus will fit into that pod. A friend of mine had his done like that. Hope this helps you out.

If you get the battery from Only Battery Packs, it comes with an instruction sheet that explains how to do that. I dive. It's just a simple rubber O-ring and allen head set screws. Make sure you handle the O-ring carefully and inspect it to make sure there are no hard spots (should be soft and flexible just like a newly cooked spaghetti noodle) or tears. Rinse it in fresh water. Clean both the inside and the outside of the pod where the O-ring will sit. Put some silicone grease, might have to get it from a dive shop, on the O-ring and and put it back together.
When the case is closed, the rubber O-ring is squeezed between two plastic surfaces and flattens against those surfaces and makes the waterproof seal. That's why you want to clean it and lube it. If it's old and hard, you can't compress it uniformly and you will probably get a little leak. Not to fear. There's a lot at stake in doing it right but it's not that tough. Regards...Jim.

I just installed a pack in my x-cal a few months ago and another Monday in my brothers X-cal, easy to do and no more nicads and their problems, I have an x-cal also for both of my boys and by next spring they will have the new nima packs also.
