Excal question

I just got a used Excal 1000 and put it together yesterday but the cable is pretty long. Do you wrap the completely around the shaft ? It seems like some fo the cable was left hanging becuase the first foot and a half has the loops but the rest does not.

Also i did some air test. I set to a smooth audible threshold, when i passed a nickle or dime or gold across coil it would sound then go back to smooth threshold. But if i passed a screw (Iron) it would null but it would go to a buzzing threshold until i passed a coin or a non ferrous metal over it then it would return to smooth. Is that normal?

Thanks, Epi

Yes thats normal, you get the buzz to let you know it was iron (usually) you may also get it after a short blip as the target is deep and needs rechecking as the machine is not sure, a few short passes will normally give a solid repeated null(iron) or it may start to pick up in tone(something else deep that needs investigating)

As far as the looping of the cable. I have always looped the cable (Tightly)completely up the shafts of all my detectors for 36 years.
I have never had a problem. However I read (CJC) that the Excalibur should have the cable gather up and bunched at the top portion of the wand. (Not swinging around). Reason being that the tightly coil cable around the shaft in the sun and saltwater condition leads to cable shielding failure.
That being said:
I still have my cable tightly wrap up the shaft! I have added the rubber bands and cable ties as suggested by CJC to avoid pulling the cables out of the unit.

Same for me although I use electrical tape rather than cable ties to secure cable IMHO less chance of damage
