Excal Phones

Thinking about changing the phones on my Excal; they don't seem to stay put. (Could be a feature of my hat size, not the first time it's been pointed out). Has anyone done a changeover DIY? Not quite sure whats in the end plug or how to wire into it.

It is really very easy.

Just remove the black covering.

Remove the 2 allen hex set screws, and wiggle out the end cap.

With some needle nose pliers, remove the little plug, and replace with the new end cap.

Put the end cap back on, and make sure the slit on the inside of the end cap aligns with the circuit board, and place the two allen hex screws.

Done.

If the set of headphones are not brand spankin' new, don't worry about polarity. If sound comes out, it's good. Now the tone might change to a slightly higher tone though.

For some, (most I think) the higher tone is better.

New end plug? I meant from bare wires on the GG's. Thanks for your reply. I like the Koss's too but cant figure out how to stop the ratchet from moving.

Clive, I have no idea how to install them, but just had Minelab install Gray Ghost Underwater Headphones and there is NO comparison. Night and day difference, in tonal quality, hearing deeper whispers, less noisy when windy and comfort. I love them and will probably have them from now on. The old blues would not stay on my head, when I dove under to fan a hole and the Koss headphone bracket stripped out on my 800 and 1000, I'm done with stock, but Minelab did warranty the Koss on the 1000 and put the plug on them too, in the event that the Gray Ghosts fail, I have a backup. Sorry I could not actually help with the installation, but I like Robert to do things like that at Minelab!

Clive try posting this on the modifications forum. There was a person who put up a pictorial on this on how to do it a while back, maybe a year ago. You can try a search for it there also.

Sent you a pm on the subject Clive. If your having Robert @ Minelab do the work your Greyghosts will have to have the Ikelite
connector on them as thats the only way they will install them by fitting the female ikelite connector on the end of the control pod similar to the battery hook up. Robert did a great job installing mine and I can now hear all the pulltabs and pennies a lot clearer before I dig them up, maybe someone out there can tell me what gold sounds like? LOL!

Have not heard it yet 1715, but am anticipating the melodious tune soon! I figure my odds are better with the Gray Ghosts, than stock. I can hear the deep VERY faint whispers, that I'm certain were unaudible before, thanks for encouraging me to step up and get a set mate!

I changed my phones to Gray ghosts you can buy them with an IKE lite connector male like the one that plugs in to your battery I put a female ike lite that is on your battery pod on my control tube so I can disconect my phones for traveling works great no probs HH RonC

I would like to see that setup. Did you wire them yourself? Sounds like a good way to go.

The meter you sent last week works fine after I figured out my backyard sucks with electrical interference. Worked perfect at the beach this morning.

Thanks

you can buy the phones from Gary at detectorpro make sure you ask for the lite male con Minelab put the female ike lite on they could not pressure test mine because I had the wot hardwired but if you use a smaller coil It would be good to get it tested I think it was around a $100 for the coil and headphones well worth it HH RonC
