First off 90 percent of my detecting is done diving. I really want to get an excal but after reading about all the problems and the servicing of them I am hesitant to buy one. My question is would you buy a new excalibur?

id buy another excalibur, might have too,but that aside, its a great machine you just gotta take your time and learn the machine be patient with it and take your time...
youll like them..

This is the Excallibur forum check out the finds on all the other forums then let us know about your Excal finds. HH :minelab:

Simply the best VLF in the water. There are precautions to take with any water detector. You don't take them you learn the hard way. The problems with Excals and Minelabs service problems are over blown in my opinion.

We only get the few problems posted here about Excaliburs as apposed to the thousands of happy users worldwide. Beach/water detecting is a harsh enviroment for anything, following the basic recomended care instructions will help, wash and clean after use, silicon grease battery connector, and don't be hamfisted with the control knobs. common sense really. Other detectors have covers etc that help protect from weather and any ding, the Excalibur is in the buff and open to all, take this into consideration with its use and you'll be fine.
Cut your detecting time by half an hour rather than squeeze out an extra 15 minutes, use the half hour for maintainence of your kit and i'm sure you will benefit with more hours happy detecting than that gained by just that 10 minutes more then leaving the detector in the warm car for days to help the salt water do its stuff, Corode.

I would not hesitate to buy a Excalibur for diving, or any other use. While there have been post of poor service time. That has been worked out. Remember that this machine has to be retested for 200ft depths each time they are opened. That means time in a tank, which could lead to a little back up. There are more post of good then bad, I won't be without one. Minelab has a new Customer Care Program and as far I can see its working wonders.Turnaround time have dropped and you talk with a technician after you first email or call. Also remember that most of the trouble came as they moved into there new location, I am sure that did not help matters.
I have bought my second Minelab just one year after the first. I am now looking for my second Excalibur, I want my friends that tag along to have a fighting chance when they come with me!

I agree that the vast majority of happy Excal users will never bother to post about that, while for sure the guys who are having problems will be sure to spread the word, so the reliability of the machine is probably much better than people would think reading these forums. As you said, though, many of those problems could be avoided with prevenative mantenance, something that most people won't do on their car let alone a detector.

On the other hand, there's always the idea of putting a Sovereign model inside a water proof box. Buy a used older model and it will be much cheaper to build one than buying an Excal, and you probably would have a much more reliable machine as well...So long as it doesn't leak. I'm still planning to do the water proof box thing by spring for my GT, being able to quickly remove it from that box when I want to land hunt. When I get around to doing that I'll be posting a How-To with pictures on the way I do about doing it. I have some ideas that I haven't seen others try and it should also keep the cost way low.

Been cold & that is only partial finds I don't count silver, or "Bubba" rings (Stainless, TC, Titanium or plated)

I would never recommend getting an Excalibur. They are junk. I owned two of the older versions and I now own an Excalibur II 1000. I sold the other two older ones to people who hunt in areas that I do not hunt. Good thing as I hate to see people show up on a beach that I am on with their Excaliburs. I know they will be equipped with one of the best detectors on land or sea. I hate that. Too much competition with all these people walking around with their Excaliburs. Finding stuff that I could have found.

Don't get one. I will be sorry if you do!
