Excal ll over nails

ToniSteve

New member
Hello,
How does the Excal ll react over nails, say from small rusted nails up to nails 3" or 4 " nails at various depths and settings? In fresh and salt water is there a difference? I am running into tons of the double headed concrete form nails and regular ones too in both fresh and salt. I will appreciate any and all informative replies to this post. Thanks!

Best Regards,
Steve

Hello Steve, generally it will null out, but in close proximity to a non-ferrous target, it will still give some hint of a signal. You have to sweep slowly over these and wiggle the coil, to get the non-ferrous target to come out of the null. A null is total silence, btw. Others feel free to chime in.

I still every now and then get a null or faint tone from a null
and find myself digging only to find out it's a nail
or Bobby pin, but what if it wasn't a nail or pin ??
o did find a platinum gold wedding band this way a few weeks ago.
It's frustrating but when the pay off comes we forget about the frustration
and get all excited because we want more gold !!

Hi,
Thanks GH and JM. So the Excal ll will actually null out on bobbie pins too? I must have dug 100 of those the last time I was out.

Best Regards,
Steve

with all 3 of the Excal's iv owned, the only nail iv ever dug was in the same hole with a 925 ring!...but i have dug many small copper tacks someone must have used to build a hull of a ship as i have dug dozens of them on one beach. and iv never dug not one bobbi pin. i have dug a few iffy sounding semi null's that turned out to be watch's and pocket knives.if it is a total dead null,i dont dig.bottle caps tend to give a null/beep.

Hi Bling,

Thanks a lot! That helps a lot. Do you hunt in AM and then switch to Disc, or? What are your disc settings? Thanks again!

Best Regards,
Steve

I hunt in disc mode switching to pinpoint once
in awhile to be exact !!
Good luck
John

Yes, on rare occation bobby pins, you can get one to come up, if you REALLY work it hard on the wiggle in Disc, but for the most part they are nulled.

1. what about the null and then the immediate nasty noise you get: dig or no dig?
2. what about the null with one tone only with each sweep, same direction: dig or no dig?

Steve, I have the Sovereign Elite and the electronics are basically the same. Same tones, controls, coils and depth. I've never had any problems with nails or bobby pins or any iron with any of the Sovereigns I've owned. We don't live to far from each other so If you want to get together for a beach hunt you can try out my Elite to see how they operate. We have some low tides this month and the dock site down the street is loaded with iron so you would be able to see how the Excal might handle these same tough hunting conditions. This was my last hunt at this dock site with the Elite. No iron was dug.

on both if the wiggle didn't bring up anything better take a bit or sand off the top and try again, also i would turn into all metal to try and see the size/shape, make the call, then dig to find out if you were right(it adds to experience) but sometimes its quicker to let the scoop decide if you are getting pushed for time due to
tide

i never use AM mode.i hunt in Disc and it set on 0..dig by the tones.for me,everything iv dug that had a null on the outer edge of center target has been Iron related.i dont dig anything above the Silver tone except quarters which are easy to tell.i dig pull tabs as some gold rings come in at the same tone, but most pull tabs have a tinnier sound where gold is more mellow.just dig everything that has a tone until you become familiar with your Excal or Sovereign.iv been useing them for about 6 years now and have found no better detector for my type of hunting.
