Excal knob guard ?

Hello,
I'm thinking of either changing my Excal II to a over under shaft , or hip mounting it. My question is , in what circumstance do you ever need one of those knob guards ? They look cool. But, don't want to waste $30-40 bucks if it doesn't really do anything.
Thanks HH

Kind like pay me now or pay me later.

The guards are 30 on ebay from plugger, or you can go without and in time the knobs and little yellow caps will start to disappear. Those are 20 dollars a set of five. I have one guard, and 3 excal's..one for the ruff, other for the wetsand, other as a lake, bay hunter....the ruff gets the guard.

Have you tried the behind the elbow configuration? Initially I switched from the factory shaft to an Andersen over/under. I did like it much better than the factory shaft. However I recently got a Plugger three piece travel shaft and now prefer the behind the elbow configuration. Plugger makes some great stuff and is a top notch guy. I also have the knob guard and feel it is worthwhile as it helps protect the knobs should the detector get banged, dropped, or simply placed down on a rough surface. You might want to give the three piece travel shaft some thought as it can be used in a behind the elbow configuration or a hip mount configuration (by taking off the elbow piece and adding the hip mount).

The knob guard is good insurance for the car as well. The detector seems to like to roll on turns even when I secure it. That little bounce snap the knobs in an instant. Worth the 30 bucks.

all the knobs on the Excal are very delicate, you sneeze on one, and it's broke

I just bought one and it seems that the battery slot on the guard is not wide enough for battery to fit...Something Im doin wrong ..???

I put have taken out my battery to charge and then placed it back without removing the knob guard.
