Excal II tone differences.

For whatever reason, my Excal II has always hit harder and deeper in disc than pinpoint. I set mine up pretty much like Erikk.

Thanks guys for the replies ..I have been in the hobby for a few years now and I have had my excal for a while and have never had real luck with and never really rated it but I think its the way I use it...I have tried running it in disc mode and in this mode there is a lot of falsing at least thats what it seems like to me and it gets very annoying stop start if you know what I mean...Its not as deep as the DF but from what you guys are finding with it, im convinced its me.Especially erik that ring is an awsome find .Although the xcal has not been my favorite and with all the nice videos on youtube I am persistant in working out this unit so Ill go out today and try some of the tips you guys have mentioned...Yesterday i went for a hunt and found about 30 fishing sinkers and 4 coins the thing I noticed was while hunting in PP the very small sinkers at about 5 inches deep seemed like they were about 15 inches deep so the signals on these were very faint however once I flicked over to check them with disciminate the signal was about three times louder so maybe it is does seek deeper in disc .I have the blue excal so perhaps hunting in Disc rather than PP is the better option on gold . I am impressed in what I see on the videos and I have started to take a re liking to the excal again ,so I think Its worth retraining myself and am getting clives books and going back to the drawing board....ill let you guys know how I go with it

Gonga, as i see it the only way you will miss gold is if when you switch to Disc mode and you hear nothing but the threshold and you walk away, you need to take of some sand and try again till disc picks it up one way or another, either a tone or a null, i only walk away if i get a solid null from varios passes after switching to Disc.
If you get nothing but the threshold its a deep(or very small) target and needs investigating

kered ..you have hit the nail on the head, until now thats what I have been doing .I have been walking away from the faint targets where the disc doesnt reach .I just got back from a 2 hour experimental hunt to try different settings ..I went to a beach where no dectorists go and the beach was very trashy ..I tried what erik sugested to hunt in disc mode ,but I just cant use it in disc its just too annoying with constant chatter and tone changes and beeps.I went back to PP which I find is more tolerable (by the way I have got the pp switch mod on mine for a while now and it still works flawlessly)..there was a lot of bottlecaps and the tone varies on them aswell, for instance rusty ones sound a lot different to fresh ones one thing I gotta say is it blocks out hairpins everysingle time,I found a couple of $2 coins and they sounded like bottlecaps..i have collected a whole heap of the usual trash that I have taken home with me so I can train myself with the different tones.

I suppose that's possible Tony. I hunted this morning with my Malaysia machine and dug several beaver tails. Beaver tails always sounded nice and smooth (like thin gold rings) on my Ireland machine. They definitely sound higher on my Malaysia machine. Seems to hit them OK but they sound different. I've got my machine made in Ireland at the factory for a minor repair right now. When I get it back I'll probably use it and use the new one for a back up. I just like the sounds better on it.
