Excal II in Seattle

Dreamurs

New member
Just quick note to see if anybody in the Seattle area are using the Excaliber II? I'm wanting to give underwater hunting a try and would like some feedback before I make a purchase.

Thanks,
Dreamurs

What kind of feed back are you looking for? Machines can be conditions and location specific, but for the most part the Xcal is a pretty flexible and simple gold getter. If it doesnt set in a closet it will pay for its self better than about any water machine. If you are concerned about trash...... consider this..... the dry sand has about 100 to 1 bad to good target ratio...... the water is about 25 to 1. Unlike a PI you dont have to wonder if its to trashy out there. A VLF with disc is the best tool for trashy conditions.

Dew,
Thanks for the input. I have decided after talking and reading people's comments that the Excal II is probably the best way to go. I was a little concerned after not reading too many posts... about folks using the Excal here in Seattle. However, a person from Kellyco mentioned that it might be due to the aligence of people using White's products since they are based out of Portland... they might be more prevalent? Seems resonable...

I considered the AT Pro... But it sounds like a lot of ground balancing as you move through an area. Not that that is a huge deal... Just something to take into consideration.

Just thought I would gather some information before I turn over TWO hand-fulls of money over for a detector! Ha ha

Thanks again,
Dreamurs

If you're going to hunt underwater, as in scuba dive, I see the excal or whites surf PI as your two main options. One of the best, Clive, uses both. Why don't you send him a PM?

Hi G. Scallops ...
I tried to look up Clive and "No results were found". Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I technically am a certified diver... But, I am embarrassed to say that the year I was certified is probably earlier than some of you have been alive. Ha ha. First things first... I want to check out some swimming holes and a few places in the river I have seen people tubing and swimming... Then see what I can find at the beaches. I have spent too much time watching those dang YouTube underwater metal detecting clips! Now I have to give it a go myself! Ha ha. After I master that... I may decide to get back to diving!

I have read a lot of info... And I get the impression with the PI machine you end up digging EVERYTHING. I want to be successful... But it would be nice to discriminate out some of the junk.

Still investigating... But the Excal II sounds pretty good right now.

Thank you for your time!

The Excalibur Ii is a Great Machine. Since it will get used in salt water it does require a little bit more care than those that are only used for dirt fishing. I have had mine for almost two years and it has found me some nice treasure.

I set disc at its lowest and dig everything that gives me a tone. Yes I dig a lot of trash but on occasion there is a nice piece in my scoop. I will dig a bushel of aluminum foil to find one nice gold ring.

Good Luck.

Sorry, his name is cjc on these forums. You know, clivesgoldpage.com. He has so much gold loot, the rest of us drool over it. From what I understand, his main weapons are the excal and whites surf PI. He can give you the best advice on which detector to use, given where you're going to hunt. I know that before when he posted pics of honkers he has stated, "your best chance at finding these is at low tide with a PI." That's all I know. I personally don't use an excal on our beaches because we often get sanded in, and our beaches are large. The excal isn't a fast responding machine, so if you swing fast you lose depth, so covering lots of ground isn't favorable with it. If however I were to scour a small swimming hole, with lots of time, an excal would sound appealing.

I agree the Xcal is a slow recovery machine in disc, but not that it looses depth on a fast swing. Because of its slow recovery you might miss a near target on a trashy beach, but on a fairly clean beach the filters work pretty good on a fast swing. If you are swinging to fast with any machine it wont have enough time to respond. All machine go into coil shut down anytime it goes over any metal....... kind of like squeezing a spung and you loose depth until it recovers. This slow recover is why most of us have the PP mod and have switched to hunting in PP mode...... there is no recover it doesnt have to process the signal just tell you something is there. Here in Fl ..... on gold its almost as deep as many PIs. Machines vary greatly too....... ive got 4 Xcal and they all seem to have their strong points for a given beach.

Machines vary greatly too....... ive got 4 Xcal and they all seem to have their strong points for a given beach. one may be hotter in PP and chatty when switching to disc, one isnt chatty but wont see that deep target and one you might not notice a depth difference between PP and disc, one may seem more sensitive to smaller targets..... but isnt as deep on larger ones as another. A PI to me is a great go to machine after you clean a beach, work the waters edge gridding for targets....... however you have to know it can be used and during recent drop time isnt my first choice for covering a lot of beach fast. In a river...... it takes a long time for metals to desolve, they have high mineral flakes, and a lot of trash. In a fresh water river....... honestly the AT Pro with a TID screen is a better choice.... but in salt water it takes a back seat to the Xcal.

Yeah man, probably best to ease yourself back into diving before introducing the additional task loading associated with detecting. If you've been away from it for "many" years, I would do a full season of just diving to get back up to speed, then try some detecting.

Thank you all for the great advice! I really appreciate it when I can learn from others rather than jump into something new without taking some time to do the research and ask some questions. Special thanks to Pete for his concern... and probably desire to NOT see me dead In the kelp clutching my detector... Ha ha. I should have never watched those YouTube videos showing people water detecting!!! Ha ha. Oh yeah, shout out to G. scallops... I did contact Clive and he sent me a note back. Wow, he really is THE MAN! I thought the name was familiar... But I am new to this forum...

Thank you again,
Mary

Ok, I feel kinda silly. I addressed you as "man" and then you signed your post "Mary". Sorry for assuming.

I don't know about being dead in KELP, clutching my detector, but when they find me dead I'll definitely be clutching my detector!
