excal II beach settings

bret4

New member
Just got my excal back and going to the beach tonight i run it in all metal, where should i run discrimination and sensitivity.
thanks for the helplooking forward to hitting the beach.

Do a search for oldbeechnut. He makes some really cool videos out on the beach. Most of the time he shows you his settings. Very good guy, very helpful too. Good luck.

I run in all metal mode as it is much deeper. I then switch to discriminate to see if it is a iron target or not Discrimination is usually run at 0- or 1. Sensitivity around 11 o'clock. Today I went to auto on the sensitivity as I couldn't find hardly anything. Too much sand I guess.

Try starting out DISC. 1 SENS.11 or 1 o'clock. Sometimes run the DISC. on 4 I can't remember the last time I ran SENS. in auto and when you start finding targets keep in mind your settings and the area you are in because you might go a hundred yards and have to readjust but that is why they call it hunting. I will be back in the clearwater area the 30th through the 7th. Good luck and HH. :minelab::detecting:

Why buy an Excalibur and then run it in all metal mode?
Since I mainly look for the recently lost jewelry at the beach and in shallow water, depth is not my main goal.
Seems to me that if you want max depth you should use a PI type detector.
I bought a new White's Sea Hunter Mark II just for the really deep stuff.
I am thinking after I clean out an area with the Excalibur, I will go back with the SeaHunter to find the deeper targets.
Looking forward to putting this to the test this summer.

For those that still think pinpoint mode detects deeper than discriminate mode ... read this!
The Excal is the same electronics just repackaged in a water proof housing.

It seems to me the only people who claims an Excalibur has the same electronics as a Soveriegn are Soveriegn owners. Minelab sure don't back up that statement. Everyone that consistently finds good deep targets with an Excalibur hunts in PP and when they hear a good tone they change to Disc. to verify.Ole Beechnut, VA Max, Gene Edwards, Steve just to name a few. Soveriegn's are great machines but they are a different animal compared to an Excaliber II. HH :minelab:

to answer original question,
pp mode check with disc to see if iron then dig...i run disc on 2 and sens if i can get away with it on max, some
this has worked very very well for me at times backing it down a bit as i go down the beach..

I was in the same frame of mind Willee till i tried it, it took a while to find a target that didn't register in disc mode, i tried all maner of setting to get it to register but the only way was to take some sand off to get the coil closer, since then my finds have gone up and better quality. give it a try for a couple of hunts and i'm sure you'll convert. My sovereign xs2apro doesn't have the same difference between modes

Hey Willee, alot of us have posted on that thread. bottom line you gotta see for youself where you live and the different sites you hunt. Just because its a post dont make it the truth. best thing to do is try hunting in both modes, set up properly, and then crosscheck in the other mode. for me the pp mode is deeper, it eliminates masking, sizing targets is easier and you can seperate up targets closer together easier BUT you do give up the sweet tones that help ID targets.
now some claim they can ID pretty good in pinpoint by the sound of the audio but Ive never hunted with it long enough to learn that.
give it a try, you might be selling that Seahunter:minelab:
I had a whites dual field which was deep but the coil floated so I sold it. my excal only comes out when I head into the water.

Neil is correct, got to go with what works in your area, be it east, west, or another country...experiment...........Joe
