Excal headphones question.................

New member
Anyone recommend a good pair of after market underwater headphones. Not really liking the stock minelab headphones. A buddy is using a pair of grey ghost's on his but I'm not sure of the model of the headphones. Thanks in advance.

Headphones are a personal matter as to fit and comfort. Everyone needs to try on different ones to find a perfect match. Most underwater headphones are hardwired by the manufactures and you are stuck with what they install unless you do modifications which void the warranty..

Good Luck,
Sandman

You can purchase the Grey Ghost headphones and send the entire kit, and machine to Minelab. I am pretty sure they'll install them for ya. If not, You can do the install yoursellf. It's actually very easy. Yes, the warranty is now void if you do the job yourself.

The model is the Gray Ghost Underwater headphones. I know several people have written on the forums about sending their machine to Minelab to have these phones installed.

Hi WillyP, The last I knew, which was (2) yrs, ago, MINELAB charged a Flat Rate of $75.00 Service Charge for any and all maintenance down to EXCALS'.
Do you have the new Yellow KOSS Headphones on your EXCAL, or the previous model Blue Headphones? Several people who purchased the newer Model
EXCALS', which havve the New Yellow KOSS Headphones have posted how Nice They Are? Curious minds want to know!! Les Robinson

Les, here's my take. I had the old blues taken off and paid Minelab the $75 for the swap over for the Koss. They sound comparable and worked well for a time. The Koss headphone brackets have stripped on both my 800 and now on the 1000. Can't hardly keep them on my head anymore, especially when diving under to fan out a hole. Have ordered a pair of Gray Ghost Underwater Headphones and am going to have them installed by Minelab soon. They said, as long as they hardwire them in for me, that my warranty will still be in effect. I am hoping for a dramatic improvement over the old blues and Koss. May never go back to stock again!

I have the blue headphones and they are a joke.....Its like putting Retread tires on a Porsche.....for the $$$$ you pay for the Excal. you would think that Minelab would have some PRIDE in the whole machine, since the headphones are hard wired in and cannot be easily changed it is the whole Machine....

I see no pride here....Would Pioneer use a fish hook for a needle on there turntables? I think not!

HELLO! MINELAB>>>>>>>>>>WAKE UP and take some PRIDE in your PRODUCTS!!

Gulf Hunter, MANY THANKS for that update!! That is the first complaint I've see about the New KOSS Headphones. I am definitely going to have to give some serious thought, as to what I'm going to do when the time comes for a change over. I have (2) EXCALS', and I'm not crazy about having to buy (2) pair of Gray Ghosts, but maybe I'll get lucky, and my Older Model EXCAL Red Headphones will hold up. They have a Sturdy Plastic headband, that does not have a cover, and I've been very pleased with them. Possibly the Fisher or Garrett Waterproof Headphones will be an alternate choice. Les

Les, my 1000 has been sent to Minelab today for the headphone R&R, will keep ya'll posted, after I get back out and runnem'! Lookin' forward to taking them for a spin.
