excal headphone cable problem

Xentrik1

New member
Went to use my excal for the first time in quite awhile the other day, it worked great, but we I took it out of the car I noticed the plastic covering of the headphone cable was all coming apart. Sorry for the bad quality of the picture, but I think you can get the idea of whats happened from it. I talked to Minelab and they said it would be like $250 dollars to fix. I have seen some other people did the grey ghost headphone mod and putting an ikelite connection, but even though my excal is out of warantee I'm still worried I might get some water in it and fry the whole thing. I don't fully submerge it I usually just hunt the surfline.

Can anyone offer any suggestions the best way to go about fixing this problem? Out of the options I've seen so far it seems the ikelite connection might be the easiest way to go. Is it truly waterproof?

Thanks for any suggestions

Yikes.....that's dry Rot.....pretty common .....if your handy with a soldering gun go for the Grey Ghost, save a little $$$..... but a lot of hunters say there's not any big improvements with the GG phones over the stock phones........I don't think Milelabs sells parts do they ?............. OBN could probably help you out.

Good luck HH

I hate to repeat answers, but OBN is the guy with your answer. You can always PM him. If your headphone cord is like that what does the coil wire look like?

How handy are you? Can you solder? Really is a very easy fix, you just need a few things. Curly Cord, epoxy, silicon tape, small tube rtv silicon. A few tools and about 60 minutes. You have to open the pod, very easy..the connection to the main board is just a very small plug, set Pod aside, and all you are doing is replacing the curly cord from the small plug thur the plastic end cap to the inside connection of the headphones, only soldering that is needed is there. and the small wires to the white plug.. I can post pictures if you want and guide you thur the repair. If it was not so close to my vacations in July I would say sent it to me. Repair any other way would be unsafe, like silicon tape or a patch job. Water can wick down the cable to the pod. You can go with the GG, heard good, heard bad...I would bet your best bet is to PM Mr. Gold Master..He makes a great pair of Peltor HeadPhones, CJC uses them, hear nothing but Amazing about them. He may even do the install.....
let me know.............if you need pictures
