Excal goes quiet in the water.

I just got back from Myrtle Beach and while I was hunting the dry or wet sand the Excal threshold worked perfectly .Different story when submerging it in the water. Walking around in the water , I have the Excal chest mounted, the Excal works perfect until I get it submerged and then the threshold goes silent. If I swing the coil over towards my scoop it sounds off okay so I'm assuming the unit still works without the threshold. When I walk back to shallower water the threshold comes back on as soon as the unit is above water. I have no other problem with it otherwise. The only thing I can think of is that the rubber seal under the threshold knob must leak water causing the threshold to stop working when submerged. Help..:..:>(

Ron..... im sure you know the Xcal uses Pitch Hold. It could be at the pitch hold that is to low for your hearing.... did you attempt when its silent to turn up the volume or threshold? Pitch Hold is something i wished it didnt have and would have preferred a threshold tone adjustment. Hope thats it.

When I had the Excal 2 it did something similar in AM, to what you described though it didn't go silent, I would say it went numb. Salt water does affect detectors, I figure it's the detector reacting to the conditions and adjusting. My current excalibur (original model) doesn't work like that, instead, it sounds off in salt water but only in AM mode.

Might sound like an obvious question, but have you tried adjusting the threshold after entering the water?

I have an Excal II purchased new in 2/2008. I just got back from the Caribbean and was having a similar issue. My machine would run stable with the Sens at 6 (12 o'clock) but would become very unstable when the control box was submerged. I have hunted there for the last 3 years with the same settings and have not had the problem. I tried backing the Sens off, but it did not help. I have noticed on the new machines, they have a "Sub Aqua" range on the Sens that starts at about 6. I sent mine back to Minelab this weekend because the warranty is getting ready to expire.

My Excal is a 1000 ,built in Australia, and I would think that because the unit is sealed, putting it in a foot of water should not cause the threshold to go silent. I have owned an Excal 1000 before and never had this problem. I still think a seal must be leaking but it doesn't affect the operation of the detector after it comes out of the water as I can walk around in waist deep water detecting with it ,as it is chest mounted, or hunt the wet or dry sand and it works perfect.

I had my battery pod crack between the connectors and to the side when the detector went under water I lost my threshold totally
silent, when It was out of the water in 5 seconds it was fine, a new battery pod solved my problem.
check the rubber seal and the end of your battery pod. sounds like water is getting to battery connection.

I noticed some water on the rubber gasket of the plug-in to the battery, siliconed the threads and gasket and tested in a tub of water. Seems to work okay. I can't get to the ocean for awhile as I live too far away but I think the problem is solved. Thanks everyone for your input.
