excal coil swap?

Active member
i am about to install a 10 by 12 sef coil made for a sovereign onto my excal 800. does anyone know which wires from the control box are matched up to the coil wires.
thanks, chuck.

I put a 15" WOT on one of my Excal 1000s a few nights ago, I can post some pics and give you the info I used to do it. I will caution you that the coil wire is probably epoxied into the end of the detector. I had to cut the wire and drill it out in order to install the new one. I then put epoxy back in as to have no leaks. I used it last night and there were no signs of leakage. I only waded with it. Let me know if you or anyone else would be interested in the pics and info for swapping the coil.

I wouldn't say that they are better. The bigger coil has the advantage of covering more ground each sweep. With that in mind if your covering more ground each sweep the detector has to process more information so the sensitivity level may be affected, depending on the ground minerals. I put the 15" WOT on mine because the swimming area at the lake is so big and is detected frequently. Sometimes I go for 30 minutes or longer before I get a target. I also like using it at the beach, here in Jacksonville our wet sand is 60+ ft. from low tide to high tide line and a couple miles wide. Try hunting that with an 8 inch coil.

I was gonna do the same thing but opted to buy a Sovereign instead. I'm glad I did it, for one thing my Excalibur waterproofing is not compromised and # two the GT is a GREAT beach machine. Its NOT just an Excalibur. There's more money that exchanges hands but I'm so happy that I didn't cut the cord. I have two excellent machines that are very good at doing what they were meant to do.
Thanks,
Cal

Anyone interested can go to the modification section I posted a small tutorial, for installing the WOT.

thanks to all that replied!!!!!!!!! ive wired mine up and am waiting for the silicon/ epoxy to dry.

I tried the 15x12 on my GT in the water and it was too much drag. Not bad, but still more than I like. Switched to the 10" Tornado and it's much better in the water. The 15x12 is my every day land coil anyway, so I keep that on my land shaft. When I get around to getting a 12x10 as well I plan to try that in the water. It's drag may be no more of a problem than the 10", or so close I can't tell. I'm spoiled by the coverage of the 15x12 and the 10" now feels like a sniper coil to me, so if anything the 12x10 will be used either on land or in the water where I would have used the 10" Tornado.

So far the spray on bed liner I used on the 8" BBS coil for my friend's Excaliber has held up great, and he's a scrubber. My 10" and 15x12 had no problems with wear in the water either with the bed liner, but I don't scrub a lot with my coils.
