Excal Coil Made A "Bad??" Sound Today

This evening I finally got my Excal out to put it back together after a long winter in its minelab carrying case in my closet. However, when I tried to mount the coil on the lower shaft, I noticed that the opening on the coil seemed to have tightened up A LOT and it was really hard to push the coil onto the shaft. I pushed quite hard and after a couple of seconds I heard a "crack" and the coil slipped onto the shaft. Has anyone else experienced this? Do I have to worry that the "crack" was actually a "bad internal crack" or was it most likely just a "snug creak" until the coil popped on? I am planning on going to my first MN metal detecting meet tomorrow evening as I have moved to MN from FL and I look forward to meeting some local people in the hobby. Thank you for your help. -Marc

Marc, its sounds like there is probably a break on one of your ears.I have used fiber glass repair kits to even rebuild ears entirely broken off on the X-Terra coils. These Kits can be purchased at our local Meijer's which is about the same as a Wall Mart.Anyway a real close exam of your coil you will probably find a hair crack.Good Luck Ron

And if it's just a crack you might be able to fix it with epoxy but make sure you clean/scuff up the area with sandpaper so it sticks real good. Then again, Epoxy can crack with constant flexing so the fiberglass might be the way to go too.

Thanks for your replies guys. The thing is, I have very closely inspected both ears and there isn't a crack on either one for sure. Is there something inside the coil that could have made this sound that I should be concerned about? -Marc

Maybe the epoxy inside right under the ears made a cracking nose, but I wouldn't worry about that as the entire coil is filled with it inside. Just make sure you don't have any holes in the outside shell of the coil which might let water get inside that crack and to the coil windings which are encased in it.

Thanks for your help. I went out with the excal and it seems to be working perfectly. Not that I found anything worth mentioning but thats not the fault of the machine. I guess it just made a little creak for the coil to sneak on this year. As its working fine and I haven't located any cracks I will just let it be. Thank you all again for your input. HH
