Excal coil bolt?

Bling

New member
the coil bolt on my Excal keeps stripping threads..and its never tight on the shaft.what do you use? thanks

Bling,

I've got the same problem and it's also driving me crazy......

I have tried the thicker plastic bolt (from toilet seats) and wingnut but it's only slightly better.

I read a previous post that someone used a stainless steel bolt and nut (packed with nylon washers) and this has done the trick. No problems with using the metal bolt/nut...doesn't cause problems with sensitivity as it's (metal parts) are not in motion relative to the searchcoil.

I thought about gluing the whole lot in place with marine adhesive...just the set the coil at the right angle and glue away !!!

Keep me posted on how thing go for you.......good luck...........Tony.:rage:

Here's the ticket Bling, no metal bolts, this will disturb the signal on VLF type units, as I tried it. I order the rubber washers about 10 at a time and keep them relatively fresh. I drilled the lower stem and coil and used 5/16"X2" hex bolt coarse thread bolts and a nylon wingnut. The coil stays in place and no more worries. I like it! Problem solved. GH

GH,

The hex bolts you use...they are nylon right ?

I like the idea of chunkier threads.

You're right.....I never actually tried steel bolts just read it somewhere.

I'll have to look for decent threaded bolts and wingnuts down here.

Thanks,
Tony.

put a small bit of teflon tabe or Locktite on the threads of the new bolt ......not good on a unit that you switch out coils on a lot , but fine on the excal !!!!!!

Just in case the hardware store does not have the nylon bolts and wingnuts, try this: http://www.plasticnutsandbolts.com/
