I was knocked down in the ocean this evening and my excal now chatters all the time. I turned it off and then i unplugged the battery and it still does the noise i can find items but the noise drives me crazy any help would be appreciated.

n/t

The unit did not take a direct hit and i will regrease the battery gasket. thanks for your help.

Hello Bret, any chance you were hip mounted? Could have traumatized the coil wire. That is why I do not hip mount, as there will always be something catastrophic, that happens while water hunting. Try what Bling suggested too, that may help, I've heard the Excal IIs are having this issue.

Clean the battery terminal real good. It is possible that you have some very tiny sand particles in them.

Also check your coil cover if you run with one. Sometimes the sand and dirt gets under the coil cover and causes all kinds of trouble.

I am thinking of coating the coil with epoxy as some have done to eliminate any chance of dirt under the cover trouble.

No hip mount . i am going to pick up some silicon grease to redo the battery. it works better this morning still some chatter but nothing like last yesterday when it happened and it was not a big wave just a wave and a big hole what a combination. and i will clean out and seal up the coil cover just in case. Will keep you informed after my trip Sunday. Thanks for all the info.

Glad you are not hip mounting, but maybe the grease will do it. I tried the epoxy and I'll NEVER do that again. It has to be reapplied about every 3-4 hunts, as I wear through it. I would NOT recommend sealing the coil cover on either, as it is a wear item, and I usually go through them, about once a quarter. I just remove it after each hunt and wash everything up well. Sometimes, I will remove it on a hunt and wash it out, if the unit is being kinda unstable. Keep us posted, till ya get a victory though, hope you don't have to send it in.

hey gulf hunter can you tell me wich machine do you like more the 1000 or the 800 are they unstable i live on the west coast ..thank you

Thanks to everyone here thanks for the help the machine is working great no epxoy used but redid the silicon and cleaned the unit up. thanks again great site.

Well, I only have 800s now. I sold my 1000, but have some reservations about it now, wish I had it back. There is a time and place for both. If you are hunting in a lot of iron, then the 800 is better, for more separation. In vast open expanses, with intermediate to light iron, then I think you get more coverage with the 1000. Both have strong points, either would be a good choice, assuming there are others using the unit in your area, with success. I would strongly suggest you see if there is a club in your area, or visit with other local hunters and see what they are using there.
