Excal battery life

Occasionally I read about guys with Excals and there batteries going dead. How long do the rechargable batteries last and can you use alkaline batteries instead?

Have had my Xcal since June, It went dead on me last nite again, seems like I get about 2 - 4 hour searches on it and its back to the charger. Im also going to get the Alkaline Battery pod soon. I think it runs about 49.99 , other than that, stright shaft it and go find the gold.

they were both the Nikad 700mh packs and were only 2 years old. I have been using the Minelab charger on both pods. I won't on the new pod. I just went to the local battery store and they are making me a new pod of NIMH batteries, 1000mh, no memory, etc. No more nicads for me for the Excal. They will spot weld the new pack together, re-install the thermal fuse and the battery clip. They strongly recommended to not use the Minelab charger. It just pumps out 14v with no regulation and recommended the Battery Tender Jr. as it is a computer controlled regulating charger that will not overcharge or cook your battery pack. I have been using the BT Jr for years and have 4 of them on my show car, lawn tractor & motorcycles. My MC batteries are over 5 years old and going strong. I have also been using it on my Whites battery pack and it is 4 years old and still going. yes you can take your Excal pod apart and re-water proof it very easily and rebuild your battery pod yourself. I'll post my rebuild pictures next week so you can see. It will save you some $$$

Happy Hunting!
