Excal and the 15"DD coil??

Flyguy

New member
Guys... I'm thinkin' of buying a 15"DD coil for my Excal. Is this a good idea, a good investment, or not? Is there a another coil out there I should look at?
Thanks for your ideas.

what are you expecting out of a 15"dd coil over the stock coil??why do you think you want to do this??

I have the 8" coil and it doesn't seem to pick up much... might just be me but it looks like a hockey puck sittin' on the sand compared to the whole beach out in front of me... :)

i have the 1000 2 with a 10" coil on mine and i do very well with it on the beaches
the smaller coil is for finding those small targets and the larger coil goes deeper..
this was my last find for 2009 about 16" down..

I have 3 excals 2 1000's with the WOT coil & the Excal 2 Go 4 it-U won't B sorry

yesterday @ about 20+ inches

A 15 inch WOT gives U more depth and better coverage Think of it as a PI with Iron reject, another deeep ring 14k 7 diamonds

For best results the coil should be hardwired, minelab won't do it and also if anyone else does the warenty will be void, if you go in the water with the 15" you will need to be in form as it creates more drag than the stock 8" or 10" harder to pinpoint too, if your beach has loads of trash and or iron the bigger coil will be a hinderence more than a help even though you might get a few deeper targets. I would look for a 2nd hand sovereign for the beach and leave the excal for in and arround the water, that way you can try all the coils you wish and change them at leasure as conditions dictate. if you take into consideration the price of a new coil and then the postage to and from someone that will do it also the labour charge, although probably not much it will probably come out somewhere close to a 2nd hand machine, it also means you have a backup if needed.

If i was determined to change the coil i think i would prefer the 10x12 or 15x12 SEF coil rather than the wot 15", slightly heavier in the case of the 15x12 but worth it for using on the sand only

I have both hardwired and the WP connector and I find both work equally as good. I don't know about being in super shape- I am 70 and can hunt the WOT 4-6 hours at a time and I do it 4-6 times a week weather permitting. You just use it like a detector not a weed wacker! and....

Good for you:clapping:, you just proved my point, hunting in the water with the WOT 4-6 hours at a time and 4-6 times a week you are obviously in form at 70, most can't and stick to dominoes:rofl:

Or use a detector set up with a coil/box that doesn't want to float like the dual field

there is one 15' WOT on ebay with the connectors incl. i think he is askin 240$ just type in minelb ecalibur and you should find it

there are 3 or 4 excaliburs with Wot coils added................most hardwire. the Wot is a great beach coil, especially for dry and damp sand hunting as is the new Sef coils.

i have never used either on my excals, but have used both on my sovereigns and like i said, both are great, both have some weight.

now u need to consider the zone where u will be hunting the most and consider that when u venture into the waves............small and large u will find D R A G..................at first my elbow did not like drag and then my shoulder did not like drag and last my doctor did not like drag...................was it the drag or was it the bigger deeper holes i had to dig to retrieve the target.................was it the bigger scoop i needed to accomplish this ??...................keep in mind these problems were from using the Wot in the wave zone for 3 to 4 hrs. 3 or 4 days a week.

elbow and should problems were back in 2007...........i gave the Wot to my buddy detector central and went back to the 8" & 10"............regretted it, but i liked it..............(my shoulder and elbow like it).

i now have a new sunray S-12 and a new Sef 12x15 for my sovereign and both are great for all the beach zones, but if i know i am going to hunt in the wave zone most of the day, i carry my excal............8" or 10".

now consider working in the water out beyound the waves where wave drag is not all that bad........................both the wot and sef work fine and the shoulder / elbow drag is much less..................many find this zone harder to retrieve targets out deeper..................that does pose a problem for these coils when used deeper

u have many thnings to consider.

good luck

Finally found some one I can corner with this question since you've used all of these large coils....WOT, S-12, 12x15. Which do you feel is deepest for you on coin and ring sized targets, and can you give some idea as to how much deeper you think one is over the other? I'm still trying to decide which to buy. I don't want the weight of the heavier coils (WOT and 12x15) if I can avoid it, but I'll opt for one of them if it's getting much better depth than say the S-12, Excelerator 12.5", or SEF 10x12. Have you ever used the 10x12? At this time I'm sort'a leaning towards it as I've been told it's deeper than the 12.5" round Excelerator and seperates and pinpoints better as well. The 12x15 and WOT are the heaviest but if they are killing the S-12, 12.5" Excelerator, or 10x12 depth wise I'll opt for one of those. I need the deepest of the larger coils for some very clean large sites I hunt that have really deep coins. A rosie at 9" isn't unheard of and these sites are much older than those coins.

i will give the SEF 12X15 the edge for the beach.

it is more stable and runs much smoother than the Wot for me.

if u are a swinger and not a scraper the edge might be with the Wot...............the Wot for me is a great coil when held above the sand and does not come in contact with it or that is the way i have found it to be.

depth.....................very debateable......................both go tooo deep

i prefer the stock 10" toranado coil over them all.................day in and day out it is hard to beat from all stand points.

just my opinion - f y i only.

So then your saying the WOT has the edge on depth for coin/ring sized targets if the coil is not scraping the ground, but that the SEF 12x15 has the edge (since it's more stabile) if you are scraping the ground? Sounds to me like it's a toss up even if I'm not "a scraper"? What about the S-12? How much deeper does the WOT or 12x15 go than it on coins/rings? If the difference is very slight (like say less than an inch) I'll probably lean towards the S-12 just to keep the weight down. I was told by JW at Kellyco that he considers the SEF 10x12 to be the deepst of all the coils they sell for coins/rings. I've also read in the "official" field test on the Explorer that the 12x15 got less depth on small coins than the 10x12.

Man I wish I could get some solid answers on all these larger coils. I just want to find out which is the deepest, and how much deeper it is than say the S-12 or 10x12 if any. I've got clean large cut grass areas where there is little trash and the coins are very deep. For these types of areas I'm willing to buy a coil just for that purpose, even if it is too heavy to use all the time at other sites. On the other hand, if say the S-12 or 10x12 is just about as deep that are going to be light enough to use all the time in place of my 10" if I want to.
