Excal and coils

RC

Member
I have been using a Barracuda for over ten years now, and it is getting tired. Moving to Excal probably 10 inch coil. Can the coils be changed out to other coils for better depth and or efficiency, or are we stuck with what Mine lab puts out. If they can be swapped out what coil will give best performance

They can be changed using a water proof two sided connector, however I don't know if Minelab would approve of that. I changed mine a few years ago and installed a 15" WOT (Coiltech) coil. Too big for true water hunting, however great for the wet. That system would allow you to change the coils back and forth. I got my connectors from SunRay.

The Larger coils that fit the Sov will work. Ole beach Nut has tried several of the quick connectors and I don't think he found any he trusted much. Those larger coils can be work...or insome cases depending on your beaches swells impossible to swing for long periods. They also may not be capable of high sensitive. Now on the wet or dry sand they might do well......PP can be difficult on the WOT as well. I put in a long hours sometimes even the 10 inch gets heavy. A better choice might be to up grade the headphones.

I have tried just about all for changing out the coils, they just don't seem to be 100% over time. The closest would be Doc's but you have to keep a very close eye on them. I recommend staying hardwired, nothing worse then being out on a trip and something going wrong with your machine. Like Dew said, the bigger the coil the more work involved. I think a good set of headphones also is a great advantage....Amazing what is there, and it is not heard because of one hearing and the surrounding conditions.

You will have a hard enough time maintaining an Excal without adding a connector. The 10 inch coil is as large as you want to go in the water anyways. Minelab knew what they were doing with 10 inch coil. The Excal is a water machine. If you want to hunt the wet with a bigger coil get yourself an older Sovereign. You will get many opinions on the best coil, but my favorite is the 10 x 12 SEF. Stability plays a big factor. Nothing is more frustrating than adjusting sensitivity every other minute. In the wash to the black sand to to dry sand. The SEF does a nice job.
