Excal 8" or 10"

What do you prefer 8" or 10" coil for your underwater detector?

I ask because I got the 8" coil and after being out I thought I'd be better with the 10". I have the Explorer SE and with the 10.5 coil, it drives me crazy in the parks, so I picked up the 5x10 joey coil. Makes a world of difference and I believe it gives me the advantage in picking out good stuff in the trash. I was thinking along the same line in the Excalibur coil choice. After being out, I am thinking I should have gotten the 10" since targets seem to be further apart.

Am I on the right track? or am I headed down a dead end route?

Figured I ask the folks with the experience and not try and reinvent the wheel.

With less trash to deal with in the water I went with the 10". I like it so far.... HH Joe

I am thinking about picling up the side mount shaft and the 10" coil -

Hey do they make a X-1 Probe for the Excalibur, I know they do for the Explorer SE?

They both have strong advantages and disadvantages over the other, I own both, let me explain. I love each of them too, but Huntress uses the 800 when she hunts, as it is lighter for her.

1000

Strengths
1. Covers better and does not require as much overlapping of the swing
2. May be a hair deeper seeking, but hard to tell.

Weaknesses
1. Must be swept slower to allow good signal penetration, without overrunning targets or causing the sensitivity to need to be backed off due to too fast of a sweep.
2. Harder to control in deeper water and wave action, current.
3. Since the coil is larger, a good target could be masked by iron, while in close proximity to iron, especially if sweeping too fast.

800

Strengths
1. Easily controlled in deeper water, current and wave action.
2. Target separation is ABSOLUTELY superior. It will pick a 1000 apart in a trashy area. It can sniff gold out of a nail infested area better than any I've seen.
3. It can be swung faster than the 1000, without losing good penetration.
4. It can be run hotter on sensitivity than the 1000, without pushing the unit into a strained mode of operation.

Weakness
1. It does not cover as well and needs to have more overlapping of coil swings, to ensure good coverage of the area.

As you can see, I like the 800 better in many ways, but I sweep very slow, so the 1000 works better for me, as I like the ability to cover more ground. In trashy areas though, the 800 will rule the conditions there, from my experience.

Gulf Hunter,

That was a bit of good information, Thanks.....

Found an old swim site I am going to check out tomorrow. (Is it time to go yet?)

In my experience its better to won both but if not then for Diving 8", Fresh water 8", Salt water 10"

Hello John, been in the water the last 3 nights, so WAY behind on posts. Discrimination on 1, Sensitivity starts around 12 noon or straight towards the coil, Volume wide open, or whatever you prefer. Disc and Threshold barely audible, but sometimes I'll turn it to just below audible. You just have to be careful and check the unit every so often, to ensure that it's not giving you that high hum, as that is the unit not dealing well with the ground. In my experience the unit is most effective, when it is in that lower hum, but do not operate the unit there, just check it periodically. You can still tell sometimes, as the unit will false some and you know you are set up too high on Sensitivity or sweeping too fast. Hope this helps.

Gulf Hunter, when you say 12 noon on the sens, is that 6? (That is what I have on the EXCAL II in the 12 o'clock position)

Probably so, I use the old model and the configuation is layed out slightly different on the Excal II. A good starting point of reference is the arrow pointing toward the coil.

Here is a picture of the Excal II, controls.

The direction the arrow is pointing will be a good place to start, looks like 6, from what I can see there. Set Discrimination on 1 and leave it there(you like gold right?). Set to Disc, Volume wide open, or whatever you like. Try setting the Threshold at barely audible and then try turning it just a hair lower, to no longer audible. See how it works. Remember, keep the coil low, level and sweep it slow (about 1' per second is about all she'll handle-if you sweep faster you'll miss the good stuff). Every now and then, turn the Threshold up to see that there is a nice low hum and not a high pitched strained tone. In the event you hear this higher pitched tone, then back off on the Sensitivity, till she calms back down. The affect the mineraization has on the unit will change as you pass from the shallows, to the deeper water. Love her and she'll get cha the gold mate!

Thanks alot. And yes I Like GOLD!!!!

I would stick with the 8 inch coil. It has least resistance in the water and I believe the diameter at 8 inch it will narrow your signal strength in a smaller picture window. I can't see if an inch or 2 in depth would help if you just go slow. gosports1@aol.com-goldnugget-Charlotte-NC
