Excal is a great MD with a heafty price tag, the BHID is a good detector with a reasonable price tag. I don't live by the ocean so i spent my money on land MD's-- DFX and V3i with my water MD a BHID. When i do go on vacation i am happy with the finds and performance of the BHID. I find coins and Jewlery in the water, wet sand and dry sand. I have dug up pull tabs from as deep as 15 inches. I really don't beleive i miss much and have found rings that others have missed. It"s just getting used to your Machine. The topper for me is customer service which Whites beats the compettion hands down, i sent my BHID300 in last fall for going nuts in salt water and 5 weeks later it came back to me with a brand new coil and a complete look over--No Charge--and the unit was close to two years past warrentee--they even paid the shipping back to me
You can even look in the past postings and see the same info--if i could get an Excell at a great deal i would love to have one

80% of the jewelry you will find could be found with almost any detector. The other 20% requires two things, a decent machine (whatever the make) and lots and lots of time with it. I use the minelab excalibur and love it. Another reccomendation you might consider is a Fisher CZ. They can be found pretty cheap used and are very deep on a decent sized ring.
