Excal 2- Discriminate set at 1- What about the others?

I just read that setting discriminate at 1 was the hot ticket for beach hunters. What number should I set the sensitivity at for the beach? Threshold and pinpoint don't have a numbered dial but if they were a clock, what time would you set those two at. This is my 1st detector and i appreciate any help. Thanks

Thanks Art, that was helpful. Why even chime in, I'm looking for insight from guys who have fined tuned their machine and you hall of and say something ignorant. congrats

Your threshold should be set so you can just hear it then back it off just a bit. Sensitivity just a guess somewhere between 11:00 and 2:00 but that is affected by so many things are you fresh water or salt. Next the best investment you can make would be to buy CJCs book on the excalibur you can find it in the classifieds. Others will have there own ideas as to what is best. Dan

Hello Gonnagetlucky, I would love to help you and if you had the Excal, I could do so. I need to see the pic of the knobs on the Excal II, because they are arranged differently and the settings will be different from the old style on some knobs. Could you post a pic up here. Gravedigger Max has an Excal II and I would trust his judgement about settings, you may want to PM Max. Best of luck to ya mate!

disc. probally should be at 0 only knocking out iron. sen as high as you can and be stable. i have always run my sovereign at full sen. but i don't hunt the beach.

With the Sovereign or the Excalibur's it is best to run the disc all the way counterclockwise and use the tones for disc. At this setting you still will reject iron and yet get the small gold rings and other great finds. Being new to the Excalibur I would recommend either auto sensitivity or one where you have a stable detector. Now it will null on iron and depending how much trash or iron there is where you hunt it may seem unstable with all the different tones, but if may just be the detector working and you will have to go slower.
First thing I would do is not worry about the depth and such, but get to know those tones and how each item will sound and as you get to know it more the depth will increase as you will know what to listen for.

Thanks for the help everyone. Gulf hunter- I appreciate your offer but my wife has the camera with her in LA visiting her mom, I Think I have it figured out. Thanks a lot.

I hunted yesterday to continue learning my new Excal 2. I dug alot of aluminum targets in the place I was hunting, regular soil. I figured out the aluminum discrimination tone chatter, but it only works when you are right on top of an aluminum object. If the object is more than an inch deep you get a good high tone and have to dig it to see what it is. The pinpoint function works great and really helps. I dug one drywall screw at about 4 or 5 inches that the machine couldnt discriminate as iron at the 1 setting for discrimination. Dont want to miss the gold rings! No silver or gold yesterday but learned alot. Gave up when I got too cold. Bob

Hello Bob, I would encourage you to dig everything that will give you tone. Even the, "aluminum discrimination tone chatter" will fool you sometimes. Some gold items will be a broken tone, so dig it all. Many pull-tabs sound identical to a gold ring. The drywall screw may have been stainless. You will always get a nice low tone on stainless items. Basically in the water, you want to dig everything, but iron. Hey it's still like a vacation compared to a PI, LOL!
