hello everyone, im new to the forum, but have been detecting for a while now. im thinking of buying a excal. 1000 my question is are they expensive to repair if something happens. thanks

Hello ronnie51. Mine is still in warranty. I still have 2 years left on my ESP (Extended Service Protection). The unit has needed to go back 2 times in my 1st season. Don't be alarmed, I break every detector brand I have ever used. Just buy new, so you have warranty. I don't know how much repairs would be and don't intend to find out, as I will sell my unit before the warranty expires to have a new warranty. Good luck!

The 1st trip in, I broke my headphone support bracket. It was flimsy and just cracked in half, no big deal.

The 2nd trip in, was more extensive. I asked that my headphones be upgraded to the new Koss and this only cost me $75, $ well spent. Better quality construction and audio.
The reason that the unit went in was irratic threshold audio. I also had a crack in the bottom of the coil. They replaced my coil & cover. Shortened my new coil wire to 40", so I no longer have 15 knarley wraps around my Lightening Rod. It's real clean with a couple gentle wraps and a coil relief loop. There were 2 defective switch/knobs, causing the irratic operation, which were replaced and they resecured my plastic yellow caps where they won't fall off. Tried the Radio Shack knobs and did not care for them as well as stock. The tech did not like my readings on my battery pod, so he replaced that as well. They tested the unit for me in their tank. They took care of everything for me under warranty, over and above my expectation, except my request on the headphone upgrade. The unit works great and is a tank on durability. I surf hunt 3-4 times a week, so the unit gets a lot of use, in violent conditions.

Hi Ronnie51, I have (2) EXCALS' still, and did have (3). They are a
GREAT BEACH/WATER Detector, especially if YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM!!
1st off, THOROUGHLY RINSE your detector OFF WITH FRESH WATER after EVERY OUTTING, even IF YOU DIDN'T GET IT WET!! DISCONNECT the Lower Stem Rod AFTER EACH OUTTING, and LET IT AIR DRY. ALSO, pickup some
Marine Silicone Spray from either Lowes or Home Depot, and spray your Lower Stem Rod, WHENEVER IT STARTS to DISCOLOR and LOSES ITS SMOOTHNESS. Or, you can USE SOME Surfboard or BoogieBoard WAX, and RUB that on the Lower Stem Rod, and then take a piece of Newspaper and WIPE DOWN THE ROD. That will HELP SPREAD THE Surfboard WAX MORE EVENLY THRU-OUT the Lower Stem Rod. THIS WILL PREVENT the Lower Stem Rod from SEIZING UP INSIDE THE Main Rod.
Make sure you purchase your EXCAL, when the dealers are running an EXTENDED WARRANTY Special, because the EXCAL only comes with a
One Yr. Warranty, and you will get any EXTRA Yr. with the EXTENDED WARRANTY. The last time I had any work done on one of my EXCALS', there was a FLAT LABOR FEE of $75.00 Plus PARTS. It's the parts that ARE EXPENSIVE. If you heed this advice, you should get many yrs. of pleasure without having to worry about REPAIR COSTS!! Best of luck, Les.

TX Les, the reason i was asking is reading some of the post here seems like a lot of references to warranty work, Ive had many detectors over the years never had one break, none of those were water detectors though,i was going to buy used but maybe better buy new, thanks again Ronnie

I'd read on a couple other review forums about the problems with eratic threshold & knobs being flimsy and coming loose...also something about the steel that is used for the knobs rusting...Yeah Kellyco has got the ESP going on so I'm looking close...right now I'm waiting on my tax refund & also for work to pick up a little... It seems some people are either having problems with SOME Excals or it could be that they have simply failed to properly learn their machine, I'm kinda thinking it's the latter...I've had a GP extreme & GP 3000 & now have the Explorer SE & dollar for dollar I'm of the opinion that Minelab is really the best company out there....thanks for the input...HH...TT
