has anyone had a problem with there excal? i sent mine out in late winter to get a control knob replaced .they replaced it and re-calibrated it, all summer i have been unable to find any gold with it .tonight i went to a pond and saw something shiny in about 2 feet of water so i went over it with the excal and it sounded like a rust bottle cap.when i scooped it up it was a 10k ring.gold has always given me a great higher tone, not a faint dull tone anyone else experience this? thanks kent

Just got 5 golds in the past 2 ..{VB and OC} weeks and everyone was a screwed up low tone. NOT as Bad as a BC, but still I would expect a nice smooth mellow med low tone..I am running settings above normal, I think that is my reason. Plus the saltwater...searching in am to Disc to check...sen at 3/4 disc 1..threshold at cut out...vol..full....got most on video, will be finished after fl this week coming.....Obn

Most gold comes in low to mid toned, a large men's ring will hit about like a copper penny. MOST gold is NOT high toned on an Excal. IMO, you should be running Discrimination on 1 and leave it there and dig all repeatable signals, even the nasty ones, till you KNOW what everything is, even I get fooled sometimes. Hey, you are on vacation from MOST iron, you can dig the rest. If you want to run Disc, a good starting point would be to set volume wide open, Threshold barely audible and Sensitivity around 1-2 o'clock. depending on conditions and black sand content, STAY OUT OF AUTO! I had one loser stretch running AUTO and went 25 straight hunts without 1 piece if gold!

Gulf Hunter saids , lose the Auto...Words of Wisdom

3/4 vol is good
disc 1
sen...at 12 ........
Maybe raise the thres....a tat..see if it changes
but Just Audioable is good..
when mine is at the cut out point/ and very unstable the targets can get very strange sounding while hunting in Disc
Let us Know...good Luck .Obn

hello to all,
well last weekend i found my first white gold ring 12k nice heavy ring, i didn't get a good hit on it but dug anyhow,
sure enough i quickly put into pocket..:clapping:
now yesterday out along the wet sand again a faint but broken up signal that you would get as a bottle cap or small trash
so again i dug and wow a nice white gold diamond ring, i cant read inside but i think its 14k? ill let you know later, i have pics of both but
i dont know how to upload pics to fit this format, Ive taken pics with my iphone,
but i guess my point is on my excalibur 2; Ive set at discriminate at about 3 and sensitivity at 2-3 and volume almost all way up..threshold with a good audible sound
so i can hear targets, changing at times as i go down beach, I'm getting the hang of my machine everyday i go out i learn more and more..
Ive also learned much from reading in this forum too.. there's allot of great info here...
thanks to all who take there time to share with us newbies..

I sent mine in to Minelab because of a broken wire.I ask if they would check over to see if everything was working as suppose to. I got it back and head fotr the beach. It use to be I could hunt the rough water with hardly any falsing..Now unless I'm in deeper water I've got to set it to Allmetal to cut out the falsing.I tried adjusting the Sen but still get the same amount of noise. I get less falsing with my GT when wading then the Excal II.It use to be to be the other way around.. A ? Do I still get as much depth in Allmetal as I do in Disc with the Excal..Something doesn't seem to be right since Minelab worked on it.

I have been hunting with the Excalibur for years and while we are digging in sand most the time , I did most all targets until I retrain my ear to hearing the difference in junk and Goodies and move on. Do you have any other Gold targets you could Re-test it on? Maybe that last gold ring was mixed with junk but not Visible. If your unit is still not able to find Gold with a smooth tone, I would contact Minelab and Explain what your unit is doing. I had one of my Other metal detectors not sound right on a certain target and they Really Fine Tuned my machine. I had to pay shipping, but that machine works Great.

Sand scoop...did you get a good charge on the batteries after it came back from Minelab? It may have gone in with a good charge but who knows what they did with the battery. If it was like my experience, it was gone a month. You can lose a lot of your battery with it just sitting there. Some similar problems I had until I got a good charge...then some of them went away. me thinks that with Disc on 3 you are at the verge of discriminating it out but not fully hence the broken signal, take it into the garden disc on 1 and pass the ring again and se how it sounds, you could also lend some of the wifes rings, eraring and stuff to test, then do them again on 3 and see whats rejected, i have 2 real fine ones that break up on just over 2
