went to the beach today with my uncle who foung a thin round gold earing i put it under ma excal NOTHING switched to all metal NOTHING what tha fo....ck!?

Yes this can be a problem with small items out of the soil, be it sand or dirt. Air test of the Excal shows nothing. I have dug several earrings out of the sand and could not find them on the beach, till I got them either uncovered or pressed back in the small pile of sand. Just keep this in mind when hunting the beach loose sand hides small signals. steve

it was not that small it was thin but the size of 2 finger put together in a circle i tried it on top of the sand and in my hand ...my sens.. was in auto but still i should get a some kind of a signal ..i had got a signal on much smaller ea rings that that one ...maybe is the round shape of the ea ring or the fact that it was a hollow ...i just don't know ...i was very surprised that happened with the excal

Tomcat
Well i see you mentioned (Auto) that is used when you are very first learning your machine it cuts down on false signals and such, But you dont want to use Auto you lose alot of depth. You can use Auto in very high trash area to help seperate targets but thats it. Anyway use Disc start around 6(Excal II) if you can go higher without it making alot of noise then try that but air tests and in auto IMO is the problem..........

i haven't met 1 guy who put his disc . over 2 ......the beach where i'm at is very trashy in some areas and better in others i go back and forth with the auto...but still not even small bip bip on the target

Hunt in Dis, disc 0-1 (as low as it goes), sens 11-2 where stable, volume max & threshold low humm

Steve, Hit the nail on the head............
Because you just taught me this last week! I'll be out tomorrow 7 miles north. steve

Does the earring form a continuous circle, i.e. is there a break in the metal (for a catch or whatever). If the metal does not form a full ring, and it is very thin, then you probably wont get a signal on it air testing.

If the clasp is not closed, there is not completion of the circuit and sometimes they do not hit. If you close the clasp it will sound off nicely, with a BOOOP!

I agree that if it has a break such as an open clasp it might not see it once out of the ground especially laying flat but try it at different angles and see if you get a hit. My Sovereign will hit very small gold rings like this tiny 14 kt. wire gold ring below with no problems.
