Unfortunately, people should not be so fast to tell guys with metal detectors where they lose their valuables. There is a thread right now on the beach and water forum where people talk about adds up on the internet, "hey I found your ring, just tell me where and when to identify it," which is totally bogus, but after some poor lady comes along and says she lost it at such-and-such a beach, the guy goes out, gets the ring, and tells the lady "nope, haven't seen it yet! Sorry!" I hope I'm wrong but this guy's ring is probably already in a scrap pile.

Trust detectorists who can show evidence of successful returns, like pictures or maybe a small story in the local paper. Don't just go around telling anyone where you lost something so valuable...

Sad to say this is so true. When I was about 8 yrs old my father was playing badminton with us and lost his gold ring. It was a gift from his brother, were large 14k with a rudy...like a class ring. We searched for days in the grass and give up. I knew a guy down the block that coin hunted so I ask him to look around for us. He looked about 10 minutes then left without saying anything.... guess he found it.

That ring could have been found by anybody...or....it could have sunk in the wet sand to a depth undetectable by most detectors.

I once tied a 1/4oz lead weight to some nylon fishing string and placed the weight on some beach wet sand. Within 15min it had sunk 10". It all depends on the beach, of course.
