I'm pretty sure I am going to be getting an Excalibur 2. I am just wondering what all do I need to know before getting one? After market rods? Best coil for trashy freshwater beaches? How steep of a learning curve? Give me the down low please!!

Go to page 150 and read forward,by the time you get back here you should be all set
Nice! You are so correct this info is all over here just read!

Sorry guys I don't have a PC and am making due on phone internet with a non smartphone. It takes me nearly 10 mins just to get to this forum; it would take a yr to find page 150 on this lol. surely somebody can give a condensed EXcal primer here.

Number one...get a straight shaft. Plugger advertises here and his shafts are some of the best.
Number two.....get a 1600 MAH NIMH battery pack and replace the factory 800mah battery. Lasts a lot longer than the factory battery pack.
Number three.....IF you are dealing with trashy areas then get the 800 instead of the 1000. The factory 800 coil is fine for now.
Number four....learning curve.....there is one just like all the other metal detectors.....so dig it all for the first several months as you will not know very much about the different sounds. So digging is how you learn.
Number five....get a decent sand scoop if you plan on doing beaches.
Number six.....use it on land too. Don't wait to get to the beach. Use it everywhere. That is how you learn it.
Number seven.....don't let it sit in your closet.....use it every chance you can.
Number eight......Don't worry about headphones or other modifications for now. Learn to use the Excalibur and then make the mods later.
Number nine.......Get Clive Clynick's book on Advanced methods for finding gold in the water with an Excalibur and his other book on Advanced field methods for the Excalibur
Number ten.......make it fun. Not that you have to find something but you are learning....so make it fun and not work. Otherwise we will be seeing your Excalibur on E-bay pretty soon.
That's it.....

Are rumors true about them not being sensitive to smaller gold like ladies rings and such? I was having trouble deciding between the Excal and a Tiger Shark til I found out the TS wasnt interchangable with coils anymore.

No it is not true. The Excalibur is good on small items. I was digging and digging a signal that I had a hard time finding. Took me forever to figure out it was a small 22 caliber bullet. That thing was pretty small and the signal was pretty big for such a small thing. It was buried but could not tell you how far down as it came up with one of my shovel full of dirt.

I've also found small silver stud ear rings and small chain.....it takes a bit of listening but it can be done with the Excalibur.

The Excalibur is as good as any other machine out and better than most if you learn it and make it your primary detector. It will make you a better other machine user because it is nothing but sound.

Couldn't agree more with finderskeeper- This machine is absolutely amazing. I have found tiny, and I mean tiny, gold and silver earring studs. This last weekend, I even found a gold backing to an earring that was maybe 5mm long and 3mm wide. I dug it out of the lake in my second scoop of sand. That is really impressive if you ask me. I also completely agree with using it on land to learn it. There have been times when I completely preferred land hunting with my excal over my Se Pro. Now that I got my E-Trac, I have stopped using the excal so much for land hunting. Get the Excal, put a ton of hours into it, learn it and I assure you, you will never want to put it down. HH -Marc

Have patience with the Excal or a Sovereign, it takes time to get to know what it is telling you, so if you don't find a lot to begin with it is normal until you get to know it and what it is telling you, then it will become AWESOME!!
Also the coil is hardwired in and cant be changed like a reg coil and will void the detectors warranty if you try to change it. After it is out of warranty then there is some waterproof connectors you can get.

Get the 10 inch coil. Sensitivity start at 12 o'clock Disc. 1 Threshold just barely audible( don't worry about different threshold sounds) swing slow. You may have to adjust sensitivity a LITTLE to maintain a good even threshold but that should get you started. Let me know when you get your machine. I was down at Watts Bar today and those settings worked great. Good luck. HH :minelab:

Well I gave Don at North Ga Relics a shout and ordered me an Excal. I got the 8" coil...I just have always been a small coil guy. I will prob have a few questions for you all when it gets here but I am real excited about getting one.

Just remember....at first you may think the Excalibur is a piece of junk if you have never used a sound only machine. But after a few hours of use, you will start to understand it and it will become THE machine for you. Sometimes having too much information can be as bad as not having enough. I found that concentrating on the sound was the way to go.

I hated mine at first. I was used to using the White's Eagle Spectrum and a sound only machine took some getting used to. Now I would never go back to a screen machine.....except maybe another E-trac.

And don't forget to either make a straight shaft or buy one. The factory shaft must have been designed by a sadistic mad man as it is uncomfortable and just plain misery to use.

I have been running a Whites TDI and Minelab GPX 5000 for the last couple yrs on land so maybe that will be of benefit since I've gotten use to just sounds and sizing objects up and such. Meters are fun for tot lots but bad if you trust them elsewhere.

daniel I just got one from don to Post how you are doing with it Butch Holcombe and myself are going out monday to a lake I will let you know how we do.

You can convert the factory shaft so it is comfortable. I moved the unit and the battery pack to the upper part of the shaft. They will fit and it will put everything under your forearm. Unit on the right side and battery pack on the left side. You might have to do a little hammering on the last bend of the shaft so it will slide forward enough to drill your last hole ( that would be at the very end of the shaft) but it will work. I use mine every day and it has been comfortable since I have done this to it. I sometimes use it for 8-10 hrs a day.
Happy Hunting.
