When going in surf of ocean with ex cal do most of you use your coil cover or not? Can you strengthen the coil by painting the bottom with silicon so it will not leak?

some say they get sand between the coil and cover.and it makes the detector eratic .some take them off and coat the coil bottom with 2 coats of Marine Epoxy others use Rino truck bed liner spray.myself iv owned over 60 detectors and never had this problem? i hunt 100% wet/dry sand and in the water.

Or just silicon clear perpex to the the bottom of the coil like my old girl, its been stuck there for years.
HH and cheers

I own 2 800s. One has Loctite marine epoxy, the other unit has the coil cover. I will never coat another coil again, as I wear through it after a couple of hunts and it has to be reapplied, it is a nuisance and high maintenance. I prefer the coil cover and wash it out, after every hunt. If you don't do this, then the unit WILL false due to the sand in there. No instabilities observed on either unit, due to having or not having a cover though.
