EX 2

Ok, so in spite of digitrich, I bought an EX2 . I think the pinpoint might be broken though so I'm hoping somoene can help with what can be expected. Is it normal to get a repeatable hit on a deep target (upper right) and then switch to pinpoint and get an unusable warbling tone? It almost sounds like a broken threshold. If I throw a quarter on the ground I can pinpoint, but when it's 7" deep, the pinpoint tone is so erratic you can't use it.

Also, in live hunting using iron disc of -6, I have yet to get a tone where the smart screen didn't bounce all over. I've dug some clad, but I want to learn the smart screen. Is it normal for the smart screen to NOT lock on in one general area?

What I have learned with the Explorers I have had in the past is that the pinpoint mode is definitely not as strong or powerful as the main operating modes. My signals are always weaker in pinpoint...especially when the coin or object has any depth to them.

As far as the signal bouncing in the smart screen mode...that can be expected also...especially if the target is deep or next to iron. Deep targets can jump from right to left. Most shallow targets will lock on without jumping. Remember too...the Explorer series love a "no-air" matrix and a super slow sweep. Keep that coil on the ground if possible and creep it along very slow.

Hope this helps...maybe others will jump in with more technical info. HH

I dont care for the pinpoint mode on the explorer xs and ll but the se has a great pinpoint mode. once you learn to x your target in detect mode you will never use the pinpoint mode. In the old homesteads and old parks I hunt it is so trashy the pinpoint mode is of no use. Your cursor maybe jumping around because of the length of your swing, after I get a signal my swing shorten down to 2-3 inches over the target.

The bouncing around of the cursor could be caused by different things. First if there are powerlines close by, it could be interference. It may be necessary to turn down the sens., one way to check if interference is causing the bouncing is to lift the coil off the ground with a clear screen and see if there is erratic tones plus the cursor moving around on the screen. You may need to try the noise cancel channels and see if it will help. If you are hunting in nails then you will get a lot of cursor movement while you are moving the coil. The Stronger non-ferrous signals should give a better tone and the cursor should settle somewhere on the screen. If you are getting weak signals, then that could be the reason for the cursor moving around on the screen.
One thing to remember about the pinpoint mode is it desensitizes itself as it encounters a signal, that is if you sweep over the same signal a second time, it will not be as strong a signal as the first time.
Hope this helps, you may well have a problem with your detector so that is not to be counted out yet.

Thats the way my EXII works also. The search mode is definitely deeper than the pinpoint mode. I have gotten weak signals with hi tone and upper right crosshairs , that are to deep for the pinpoint mode, and did not give a sound in pinpoint. I have one such target on a video .. heres a link, its toward the middle of the video.around the 3.47 mark..HH...Rich

Agreed, X-ing over the target is very reliable. I use the pinpoint as well. I have the SE and it took a while to get used to the pinpoint. It is not as crisp as my Fisher CZs. You have to move the pinpoint OFF the target, hit PP, them bring it back over the target. (You can detune it if you try to PP over the target and then you get a null where you are wanting to pinpoint.) In trashy areas, this is sometimes hard to do as you will pick up multiple targets. With practice, you can isolate the one you want.

That was VERY helpful, Rich! Buying something used...you never know if it's acting like it should. Thank you!

You are welcome Shambler. Sometimes seeing something makes easier to understand, The EXII is definatly not as cut and dry to use as most other machines....HH Rich
