Ever have those days when it's iron only :stars:

Old California

New member
Got invited to detect an old pre-1892 farm site with a friend, Mark is another one of those friends I have that has switched from using the Explorer and is now using a T-2 or F-75 for relic detecting.

Using an old map of the area and by foot we finally located the site digging up all iron signals trying to figure out the precise location of the farm. The site may date back even earlier but we know it's at least 1892, Took us a while to locate the iron and when we did boy did the iron leap out by the buckets full.

No old coins surfaced but locating the site was a find in itself, Those that locate old settlements or long ago lost structures know what I mean. Anyhow, This forgotten farm house had allot of iron and from the surface the area looked like a Norman Rockwell painting without a hint of anything ever being there. Just a mountain with winter grass swaying in the wind, Nature at it's best.

I've been using the all metal mode for special types of detecting, I find the T-2 all-metal mode is so much better when used under the right conditions especially for smaller size targets or for thin/smaller size gold jewelry as long as the ground allows. Too much iron then I switch back to disc mode but in some areas when iron is not an abundance I use the all-metal mode.

I can see the T-2 faring well for gold nugget detecting in the all-metal mode, In one area I was digging up tiny boot nails and surprisingly a piece of boot leather surfaced attached with part of a larger boot square nail. Even the tiniest targets screamed out loud and clear with a Zip zip sound as found on gold machines.

Here I'm going on two years with my T-2 and it still surprises me, Below are some of my finds for the day.

Hey Paul
Congrdulations on finding that new site
Looks like You may have found the blacksmith/cobblers
work area.
Hang on to those horse shoes and maybe we will get together
and pitch a game one day.

Thanks Kenny,

Actually, The farm house site is a friends who invited me to help in locating the site. He was granted permission to detect it and even bring a friend.

I think you're right, Some of the larger pieces of iron we found are hand made by a blacksmith. Maybe even pounded on the same premises, At least thats what we're thinking based for the abundance of iron.

Got to be an old coin or two in there, Maybe next time :)

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)
