Ever have this happen while relic hunting?

Got an iffy signal, so I started digging...hmmmm.....sounded better as I made the hole a little wider and bigger.....hmmmm....this could be something!! Finally got down to about 2 feet deep. Looks like it may be an artillery shell. Had the heart hard pumping by now. As I got it nearly dug out, it started to look like a fragment instead."'Oh well" I said. "I'll take it anyway". After spending nearly half an hour digging and knocking the rust off, turns out to be a hunk of twisted metal that I believe an old relic hunter buried years ago to play a trick on the next guy. What a disappointment. It sure had me going. It was fun digging anyway with the anticipation that it COULD'VE been a goodie. Thanks for reading.

I honestly don't believe that "an old relic hunter buried years ago to play a trick on the next guy". I've had similar times while out detecting, but when I see the target is far out of reach, I usually say it's that old Studebaker down there and I quit digging, replace the dirt, give a chuckle and move on. HH, Nancy

Have to admire your spirit Hanover, but I'm with Nancy. Only in my mind it's an American Motors Gremlin.

I've had it happen. It's a real battle in your head to quit digging and cover it back up. I've even quit and covered it up and then went back to digging again. Always seems to be junk, but one day, just maybe, it'll be good. HH

Oh my God, I've not heard of that in years and Lord forbid me even being in an AMC Gremlin. That's a good one.:rofl: A Grimlin?:rofl: I got my laugh for the year. Tell me it wasn't a &%$@ green?! Thanks and HH, Nancy

I think that's the only color they made those "cars" in Nancy. I think I'll use that term from now on "...I gave up digging a deep Gremlin signal..." LOL You gotta see the humor in our less-successful efforts or you'll go nuts. Nice effort Hanover...let us know when you get to the bottom of it.

hey you guys and gals... I happen to be a proud owner of a 1973 Gremlin, white w/ an orange stripe and a blue interior.... O.K... maybe I'm not proud..... What would fall into the category of GREMLIN? I've dug a lot of deep GREMLIN s^*@#t. Having fun diggin' whatever.... Jack

Apologies Jack. Seriously ?.....you have one ?!?

no apologies necessary. I was only yanking you guys chain. I really do own one along w/ quite a few other classic cars, trucks and tractors. I don't have much time for them these days between work and family responsibilities. I love seeing what you guys/gals dig up. It keeps my interest up. This sight has so many awesome and friendly people... the dedication is unbelievable. I hope some day I can meet some of you....Oh and I'm partial to Boxers. Dogs that is........HH you guys Jack

I'm glad you can see the humor in it. Like I said, I call it an old Studebaker down there when I know the target is VERY deep and large. Yes, there's a great group of people here Jack. Boxers? Did you say "Boxers"? I KNEW YOU WERE A GOOD MAN! HH, Nancy

The best one (so far) that's happened to me was a strong signal under a large, flat rock. Having read that sometimes caches are hidden or disguised by objects above where they're buried I had great hopes. After digging around the edges and prying it up, expecting to find a real treasure hidden under the rock, I turned up an old ring gear from the differential of an old car. Not much value there LOL.

A couple years ago me and my hunting buddy had a good laugh . We were detecting a old farm yard when I got a good coin signal when I tried to dig it I soon figured out it was two deep for a small coin size target so I just filled the hole back in and moved on . Later I told my hunting buddy what I did so he said lets see what it is as we were curious so I showed him where it was at . So he started trying to dig the target out after a foot or more he was getting tired so I walked out to the shed and found a tile spade and gave that to him to dig with . After digging for a little while longer he hit the target but it was wider than his hole so he started digging his hole wider finally we got it out and it turned out to be a cast iron door off of the ash compartment of a old wood stove . It turned out to be about a foot long and about 10 inches tall was the whole door. It was alot of work getting it out but we had a good laugh out of it and no we never dug to see if the rest of the stove was there or not if it was we left it down in there .

I'll have to disagree with you on that Nancy. I don't believe that piece of twisted metal got down THAT deep by itself. It was right behind a confederate trench way out in the woods. I have also dug old beer cans over a foot deep. I used to know relic hunters that would actually bury stuff to play tricks on the next guy. Just my opinion.

Oh, that's so sad. Why would they do that..........I know they wouldn't like it if they found some old piece of metal that someone put there for meanness. What a sad world we live in. :sadwalk: Hopefully it doesn't happen too often. HH, Nancy

Yeah, it's really a shame people do that, but what can you do? Here in Va. there are a LOT of relic hunters who flat out just don't give a hoot. I just deal with it and move on. I don't feel the need to trick someone just for a laugh. I take out whatever trash I find so as not to dig it twice. Good luck hunting and don't give up on those deep targets.

You've got the right attitude HanoverDigger! HH, Nancy

i felt i had to say something. as a teen i owned a 52 studebacker commander. i got it from my dad. not my choice but it was free. one of the best cars i have ever had. so can we agree to drop the gremlins and studebakers and focus on the italian fiats. or french le car or chevy vega or maybe the old fireball from ford, the pinto?

The BEST condition shell I've ever found[have found 100+} was in a hole that someone had given up on.The shell was a 10lb Parrot bolt in mint, mint condition. I have never quite a hole and have some deeeeeeeeep shells.

That's a lot of shells. I have only dug 2 and MANY frags. and a 20 lb. parrot ground burst with lead balls and the fuse. I also found an officers staff button, lead sabot, and other stuff in holes someone started but never finished. I always finish digging the target no matter what.
