Ever Damage A "Good Find"?

Treasure Mike

New member
As you can see in the first photo there is a scratch on the left side of the ring. I was out today at a baseball field between first and home plate when I got a 26-28 VDI reading on my MXT's meter using the Bigfoot coil. I pushed my Lesche digger into the turf about 2 inches when I hit something solid. When I recovered the 14K gold ring I saw what I had done- Bummer! Thats the first "Good Find" I have ever damaged. The ring weighs 4.8 grams and has two tiny clear stones that tested positive for diamonds. Yes, I finally broke down and bought a diamond tester on Ebay for about $75.00. I checked all of my rings with clear stones and found two that tested as simulants the rest tested good as diamonds. Nice little tester and it is easy to calibrate and use. Thanks for looking! Mike

Yeah, I've damaged a few finds..... one way around it is to dig a little bigger plug.

A while back, I dug a very corroded, bent metal disk....... "Well", I thought, "If it's a coin it'll bend back.....".

Of course, when I went to bend it back it broke right in half. "Jeez".... "It must not be a coin"....... I thought.

Well, a few days later I found the two pieces while cleaning out my digging pouch.

I cleaned them up a bit...................

It was a Spanish REALE!!!!:cry::cry::cry:

Duh, Duh, Duh!!!!!! :rage:

Oh well, can't win them all!!! :huh:

Found a laced button once. It was all full of dirt, roots had grown through it. Water did not rinse it out, I threw it in the junk can. Later I soaked it over night then tried to get the junk out only to have it disintegrate in my hands. Next issue of Western Eastern treasure had Mel Fishers latest finds on the cover. You guessed it, there it was. Is it possible to have been a replica?

Hi Mike, CONGRATULATIONS on your NICE 14kt. Gold Ring/Diamonds!! If you take the ring to a jeweler, they might be able to Buff or Polish that Scratch right out of the ring. It's WORTH A TRY!! Most they can say is NO CAN DO!! HH, Les

guess we've all (just about) scratched a thing or two.... dug a 1953 wheety once...(almost pristene condition) and gave it a 1/32" nick with my probe... breaks my heart everytime I think about it.......Gene
