EUROPEAN GOLD MARKINGS

Hi Fellow hunters,

Over the years I have found a few .750 rings and learned that it meant 18K gold. Does .585= 14K?

I found one today with my Infinium LS and 8" mono coil. From the seperation of the sizing seam I would think it was there a long time.

The signal for that mass of metal wasn't very big (in the sand, damp from recent rains) and that surprised me.

It's a man's pinkie ring with a crest and no initials or date.

GL&HH Friends,

In similar fashion...I found a small thin Gold chain that has markings "Italy" and "925". Now I have plenty of silver rings with the 925 marking but this is my first Gold chain.

Hoping it's 22K (.925 X 24) and not gold plated over Silver. The chain is so thin and delicate that plating seems not possible,.

European marking system is a little different, but makes for the same thing.

Carat Weight divided by 24 = the European marking.

10/24 = 41.7% pure or .417 marking
14/24 = 58.5% pure or .585 marking
22/24 = 91.6% pure or .916 marking

Makes for 24k gold to be as pure as possible(100% is not possible, 99.9% is as good as it gets.)

Sorry DrJoe but you have a silver piece that is 92.5% silver and is plated with about 1.5mil gold (virtually none). Congrats though...it is still silver.

There are more elaborate charts out there on the web , but this one covers most we run into.

A while ago 22k jewelry seemed to be the in thing for a while- here in Australia, with regards to buyers. They are out there, hopefully at the beaches as well, not sure about over in the US.
