European detecting?

That will be some kind of forum to follow! The regulations and laws are so varied. (In fact I was just wondering what kinds of considerations the different countries have to follow?) Southern Europe a lot tougher on detectorists than say France or Germany? With Europeans being so much more...diverse, would a common forum be possible?
Don't get me wrong but the town I live in (Washington State, USA) is only 127 years old, has minimal cultural diversity/historical depth (compared to you guys) and all you'd get for pulling something old out of the ground is a "congratulations". Could you comfortably expect the same reaction if you were detecting in say... Dubrovnik or Ostia? That forum would have to have a lot of considerations. Not saying it wouldn't be possible but...problematic. (Is there a forum out there to model from?) Don't know, just curious.

Question....What all do you guys have to deal with in your respective countries?

ok I can only answer from the german side of things, every german state(bundesland) has its own laws, for exampl in badenw

all right mate, I think the problem is that most of us here in europe are not willing to post pics of our finds, big brother is also watching

I'd like to see such a category. There are no pictures in the posts above and I still found it interesting reading. I think you're big brother, is an amatuer compared to ours in the US. LOL People have posted pictures of rings and then have been contacted by attorneys demanding the return of the property to a client they represent. Anything after that is expensive and emotionally draining. How about a category with no pictures allowed?? Jim

I notified the owner of your request. Let's see what happens.

Hi
I live in australia but have relatives in the czech republic. They're aware of my interest in metal-detecting. It just so happens that in the village where they live they own a property (old house with attached orchard)) on the outskirts of that village that's been in the family for many years. No-one lives there now and its like walking into a time capsule when you visit it. Apparently it used to belong to my cousins grandmother. The building is a couple of hindered years old and was originally a 'drinking house'. In other words an old pub. They said I could detect it next time i'm there. They also offered to take me to a nearby derilict castle site to detect. I asked them 'what about the law?' - They just said 'no problem'. I get the feeling that in the czech republic at least they're pretty relaxed about this sort of thing. Its the same in Russia too I believe - I asked Sergei about it (the guy with the web-site who detects in russia) and he said that its generally ok in that country to detect almost anywhere. It gets more relaxed the further east into siberia you go.
cheers

Keep in mind, that whatever "laws" you might find written in the various European countries, may only apply to public lands. That is to say, some European countries have seemingly downright discouraging laws, if not outlawing it altogether. But there is nothing to stop you from hunting a farmers field with permission, till you are blue in the face. Ie.: the laws apply to govt. land, not private land. Just like here in the USA: you might read something, that if mis-interpretted, may seem to say that MD'ing is illegal. But it may only apply to federal level land, or shipwreck salvor stuff, etc.....
