Eureka... I think?

OK. Up until a week ago the only detector I had any experience with was the Soverign GT, with a meter. Then last week I got a Tejon and have been trying to come to grips with how to use it. I have been a bit confused. Dave's post yesterday was a bit of a Eureka for me because I realized that, I think, with the Tejon... you disc out what you don't want to hear and then dig every tone you hear. That make's sense. Up until then I had been trying to understand how to use the Tejon in light of the Soverign and it's ID ability.
Am I correct that the proper way to use the Tejon is to disc out stuff I am not interested in and then dig every tone?

There is one thing that confuses me slightly... people telling me that they can tell what to dig by the tone of the Tejon. I'm not so sure about that... Yesterday I had some small folded pieces of scrap aluminum that I had dug and for the life of me I could hear no difference between the scrap and a nickel and a quarter and a wedding ring.

This has been a stumbling block to me in learning to use the Tejon. I have been trying to learn to "hear" what to dig and not dig instead of disc-ing out whatever I don't want and then digging everything.

I am going to try using the Tejon in this way in the future. Disc out the stuff I don't want and then dig every hit... is this correct?

Any comments??

Thanks,

Julien

The Tejon, and others the C and V, the higher disc you set the machine the more you will discriminate out. In other words if you set the disc at nickles, then anything in the conductive range of nickles and below will not be detected. So you have to becareful of this little instrument as you don't want your disc to high. If you are in a junky area- adjust that disc where-ever you want it to be, it there are too many screw tops, or pop-tabs make the necessary adjustments and probably your disc will be set higher. If you are looking in iron areas, the lower you set that disc, the more chances you have of finding something good, very good. However that is up to you. This machine doesn't have 18 different sounds, it has possible three different ones. One for an item being disc'd out. A borderline sound which is clipped and sounds okay (which you might want to check out!!!) and that sweet upper tone of a signal which says, "Dig me as I am good!!!"

So this machine isn't the Sov, and isn't as heavy and doesn't require that you sweep the coil very fast. Some motion is good but if you are hunting for old coins, go slow and listen to that true "whisper" of a sound. It might clip as described above, but dig it anyway to investigate. Again if the area is heavily trashed, increase the disc but be warned, the higher you adjust that knob, the more goodies you are leaving behind. Be patient with this machine and it will reward you greatly. ***Disclaimer, I have the baby brother the Vaquero but these machines are comparable in many ways...the Cibola is also another fine machine and light as well!!!

I use Sun Ray Pros. I don't know if they are upgraded or not. I've had them for about 6mos.
They are very loud with the Tejon, i have to run them all the way down on the volume and they still hurt my ears sometimes. Well, I guess they do have the limiter switch, I just have not fooled with it, I am used to using them with one switch up and the other down with the SOV however both switches down with the tejon, i'll try flipping the limiter up and see what happens. I find it on the loud side all the time though...

I use a Lesche model 85 and a model 80... 100% accurate, right!

Thanks,

Julien

When did they change the limiter circuit and how can I know if my headphones have the new or old limiter??

J

I just talked to Ralph at Sun Ray and he told me that they do not offer upgrades to headphones and the new one's with the new limiter circuit are not yet available...

I found out I had a defective switch, sorry for all the confusion, I got too excited. I tore my ear cup cushion and paid get it replaced when I sent them in to fix the switch. Now you know the rest of the story.
