Etrac's pinpointing question

I've had my etrac's for less than a week and have tried to go out for at least an hour a day. Today I went out twice for an hour or so each time. I've noticed over the last few days that my pinpointing skills on the etrac leave a lot to be desired. More often than not, when I find an object and push the pinpointing button I wind up digging a plug next to the first one to find the target. Noticing this a couple days ago, I've slowed down when I'm pinpointing now and moved 90 degrees around the target in an attempt to pinpoint more accurately. I still seem to be digging a second plug more often than not...any tips/tricks out there for a beginner?

Are you using the pinpointer button on your E-trac? I had a similar problem as well. It was somewhat better when I used a smaller coil, but I've now switched to the "waggle" method and I rarely use the pinpoint button anymore.

I'm new to the ET my self, but someplace i read about pinpointing(goes4ever.mymdforum.com) and it said not to use the pinpoint on the ET it was easier to just move the coil back just until you loose the signal and then dig, seems like it works for me I'm usually right on,they have other video's on the site also you may want to check out

Go to your Preferences Menu. Go to pinpoint and see if you are in Normal or Sizing. If your are in Sizing switch to Normal. After you get to know the E-Trac you can try Sizing a bit of a different animal. Hope this helps. Welcome to the Forum

When you use the pinpointer on the E-Trac, watch the bars on the screen come toward the center together. Also listen to the volume increase, you want it to be the louadest it will get when the bars come together then it will be right underneath the shaft to the coil and bolt. The X5 coil is the same. The 12X10 SEF is loudest right where the curve is in front of the centerstrip of the coil like when using the wiggle method with the pro coil

Goes4ever shows ya how on one of his youtube videos. It is way easy once you do it a time or three. I haven't used my pinpoint button yet and I can get within an inch if not dead on every time. Best of luck, I hunted with my eTrac this morning for the first time and I really, really, really like this machine.

Watch GFE video,do not use the pinpoint button to locate your target, you have no idea what you have pinpointed nail, foil, hairpin your coin could 7 inches away.your depth will not be right either 80% of the time, unless you are in real clean ground with no other targets.I will say one thing for Minelab FBS detectors they created a whole market for the use and need of handheld pin-pointers.

make sure you are using PINPOINTING ans not SIZING... which are both options on the Etrac... they are settings you can switch. After 10's of thousands of digs with mine, my 'center' is 2" down from center coil. I can dig a soup-can plug and guarantee it is in there...
