IM NEW TO THE FORUM AND I WAS HOPPING SOMEONE COULD ANSWER MY QUESTION . IVE HAD A ETRAC FOR A YEAR AND STILL CANT GET USE TO IT. THE NUMBERS JUMP ALL OVER THE PLACE AND I DONT KNOW IF I SHOULD DIG OR NOT. FOR INSTANCE IF I GET A 12-42. THEN IT WILL GO TO SOMETHING LIKE O9-28 AND A BUNCH OF OTHER #s. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY. ANY HELP WOULD BE HELPFUL. ALSO ON THE SCREEN THERE IS A SMALL SQUARE WITH CROSSHAIRS IN IT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. THANKS

First , unlock your caps , we can hear you! :)
Then read this http://www.minelab.com/__files/f/4065/4901-0065-1.3%20Instruction%20Manual%20E-Trac_Screen.pdf if you don't know what the little square is you haven't read it well enough and need to go back and review

Your in some serious trouble if one year has not taught you what the cross hairs mean . The help you need lies in reading all that you can!

HAPPY YOU CAN HEAR ME. THE REASON FOR THE CAPS IS MY VISION. I FOUND THE MANUAL ON MY COMPUTER. IT WAS WHERE IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN. I WILL READ IT

I DIDNT MENTION THAT IVE ONLY USED THE ETRAC 3 TIMES AS I WATER HUNT WITH A EXCAL. IM TRYING TO GET USED TO THE MACHINE

On my computer there is a little magnifying glass in the bottom right corner.
If I click on it I can choose between 100 or 125 or 150 magnification.
If you have that try it and you probably won't need the caps lock on.

Ranger6,

You need to sweep your coil over some known targets and listen to the sounds. Put a dime on the ground and sweep the coil while raising it until the sound disappears, then lower the coil while sweeping over the target. You could also plant a test garden. Bury some coins at a reasonable depth, then observe the visual id and the sounds. Remember, sound is more important than the numbers on the screen. Also, if you want to find the deep stuff, you have to slow the swing speed way down. One last thing.. while learning any detector, it's a good idea to dig everything until you develop an understanding of what the detector is telling you.

There could be a number of issues. You could have a bad machine, but you need to do some other things to rule that out. I'd take Doug's suggestion and run your coil over some know targets and see if they stay consistent. Another idea would be that your in Manual sensitivity and its really high. I suggest going to Auto Sens.. The numbers should stay fairly consistent. Do you have a coin garden? If you're just getting erratic readings, then something isn't right.

3 times isn't nearly enough to get used to the machine by any means. I've got well over 600 hours and still learning.

The most important thing is CONSISTENCY IN SIGNAL.

Then noise cancel and hunt that way for awhile. Air test some targets and see where they fall . GO SLOW I can not stress that enough.. A MUST !!!!

Hi Ranger:

Welcome to the forum...sorry you were greeted by some harsh responses. Whoa!! Seeing that you have only used it 3 times, I definitely know why you feel frustrated. So did I, but I just kept at it and Nebtrac and Doug are absolutely right. I would also suggest watching some Youtube videos of others using Etrac. It helps me out a lot still. I'm getting better at the Etrac.

See Nebtrac's response and he has links to his Youtube videos.

Good luck!!! Can't wait to see your future posts!!

First off you need to tell us your settings? Are you running manual sensitivity? What pattern or discrimination are you running? For instance if your running manual sensitivity at 30 in a wide open screen then your machine will most likely be jumpy to say the least. Just go over all your settings and post back?

Sounds like you did not buy the etrac from a knowledgeable dealer that is willing to take the time to slowly and patiently explain how to use the etrac. I had the advantage of finding such a dealer, and as bethisa2j mentions there are a lot of excellent utube videos that were not available back in the mid-1980 stone-ages when I was getting started. (where did the time go?).

My best advise in your situation would be to join a local treasure hunting club, or find someone in your area that owns an etrac and is willing to show you the basics. Even if you have to pay an expert or dealer a reasonable hourly rate to show you how to use your machine (or determine if there is something wrong with your machine), I expect you will save so much time and aggravation that the investment will be well worth it and pay dividends for years to come.

It is very easy to become frustrated and give up if you do not learn to use the detector properly, and the best way to begin is to clear your mind, and have someone show you the very basics. (best example is Mr. Miagi, 'wax on, wax off'). Then, you will be ready to study, read and practice, practice, practice.

Best of luck,

Joe

I was fortunate enough to have someone in the area to help me. The same person encouraged me to buy a Etrac and when I got it he spent a couple hours showing me how to use it. After I was somewhat proficient with it he then started to show me patterns and such that he uses for the area. I watched tons of videos and read Various books but nothing came close to the hands on help I received. Also plant yourself a coin garden...you will be glad you did.

THANKS DOUG ILL HAVE TO DO THAT.. I KNOW IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO GET USE TO MY EXCAL.. ITS GOING TO BE THE SAME WAY WITH THE ETRAC

sounds like youre on the right track, you just need to put a lot more time in on it. Its not a simple "beep and dig" machine. the crosshairs are showing you the numbers, they represent the same thing. dont worry if theyre jumpy, it really doesnt matter. what matters is how consistent the target sounds as you sweep back and forth over it.
