Has anyone put them side by side for a comparison? Would the Sovereign work for coin shooting?

There's a thread a little bit down the page about the same comparison.

IMO the GT is superior on the beach and for gold jewelry, but the E-trac outshines the GT when coin shooting for silver and in heavy trash. There both top of the line machines and either will get the job done.

Yea, check out the other thread. Only thing I'll say here is that at least with the 12x10 on my GT one of my Etrac friends has had me check badly masked or super deep coins and the GT/12x10 has seen them all *just as well* as his. And, we compared notes from many angles. Many of the badly masked coins were a complete null for both of us all the way around but in one tight spot. Coins on end next to iron too. And, I had one deep coin signal that sounded 12" or more and was a whisper. In Auto +3 he couldn't hear it even though his sensitivity was riding very high. He had to take it out of that and raise it the last few clicks in manual to hear it...And even then he said it was just a whisper for him too. That tells me both are pretty evenly matched in depth as well. He is running very minimal iron rejection while I am running of course the built in high iron rejection of the Sov/Excal. I think the super sharp detection field of the 12x10 makes any difference a wash in terms of iron rejection/masking. Only once could he hear a slight coin hit that my GT gave a total null to from all directions. He dug it and sure enough it was iron.

With either the E-Trac or the Sovereign there is a learning curve and depends on how well you get to know your detector. I know my Sovereign very well and do great with it, my friend with the E-Trac knows it well too so we do compare signals at times just to see if we both can hear the same target and ID it as good or not. He has gotten several signals with his E-Trac my Sovereign GT could not get as they were too deep. I have dug just as deep with either the Sovereign or the E-Trac on a coin, but like I said he knows his E-Trac well and I know my Sovereign well. He used to use a Sovereign before and really did great until he run into a Friend that had the Explorer XS and knew it well and got some targets he couldn't with the Sovereign, so he get a E-Trac and been going over the same places he did with the Sovereign and doing very good.
Like I say it all comes down to how well you know the detector you are using. I love my Sovereigns and do well for me and dig less trash and more good targets than I can with the E-Trac. Both are excellent detectors and both will do well if you learn them.

Anyone have a sovereign for sale??? lol. I might just use the ole cc but a used one would be cheaper. I don't like carrying a cc balance. Anyway. HH an GL. -Joe

Joe, here's how I found my used GT (with meter included), my 15x12, my 12x10, and my S-5. I simply posted WANT TO BUY (WTB) ads in the metal detector or accessories (there are two separate forums for that) forums here on Findmall. On the main page listing all the forums scroll all the way down to the bottom and you'll see them. By placing WTB ads I got super fast responses via PMs from people wanting to sell that stuff. Many people won't bother posting something for sale and just will bite if they see somebody posting a WTB ad on there. I seemed to get better deals that way too. They weren't pressed for money because they didn't have those things listed for sale, but they figure if somebody is looking for one they might as well get rid of one they weren't pressed to sell but it's just sitting around the house anyway.

Now, when you hook up with a potential seller, or for that matter if you ever do sell something your self, simply click on their name and then click on "SHOW ALL POSTS". It's a great way to review the history of that person. Have they been on the forum for years? Good sign, as who is going to sign up for a forum and then wait for years to scam somebody? Especially I like to see where they sold stuff before on here and got good remarks about the experience from others. Many will chime in on the for sale threads after the deals are done and say "great trustful guy to deal with" and such. That's a key way to judge who you want to buy or sell from.

All that said, the Sovereigns (all the models) seem to be hard to find used. Etracs were scarce before the new CTX, but the Sovereign seemed to be even scarcer to find used. Funny thing is now I see a lot of Etracs for sale as guys go to the CTX but still not a ton of Sovereigns or Excals. That should tell you something. Many Sovereign guys that buy other machines still hold onto it as it's one deep beast in even the roughest of grounds that even the fanciest of modern detectors can struggle with.
