Etrac Question

New member
With all the good targets lumped into the 12 ferrous...some, if not a lot of bad targets it would seem will fall in that range. How are you "Top Guns" telling the difference in the good, and the Bad ??

I'm new at this with the Etrac........Thanks

I'm not in the "Top Gun" category, but, for my use over the last 10 months, WAY too much has been made of the 12 ferrous line. What I did, was not try to out think programmers, and just try to learn the machine as it is.. I didn't use any of the factory programs, but did read parts of Andy's book and various posts on this forum. I started just like I did with my old XS. I air scanned all items that I had and that I wanted in my patterns. Using that as a starting point, I have slightly modified the pattern as time has passed. Reading about the different settings etc, I have experimented with the modes to a small degree. I didn't want to vary too many things at once, because then you never really know what made the difference in the machine operation. Keep in mind, I'm not finding 10-15 silvers every time out. ( 4 mercs and a rosie yesterday, and all 6" or more) I still have a lot to learn, but I have done okay finding nice old coins in areas that have been hunted hard by many people with a variety of machines, maybe it was luck, but I have the coins now and for me that is the result I'm after. Good luck with the new Etrac.

As stated earlier the ferrous 12 thing was disliked by several Explorer diehards at first but not much said about it now by the diehard E-Trac users as it is a non-issue for most.Look at it from this angle for a minute Elton if you please. Most other top end machines only give you one set of numbers in the first place and the Minelabs are giving you twice as much useable info with both ferrous and conductive numbers. The ferrous 12 thing actualy makes it better for many users as you don't have such a broad range of numbers to try and decipher when getting a signal. Also learning the quality sounding tones on good targets will go a long way in helping to dig more goodies and a lot less undesireable targets.I wish you well with the E-trac and would be more than happy to give infield help to anyone close enough to me to allow us to hunt side by side and compare signals.
I am not saying I am a top gun as I just hunt for the pleasure of finding older coins and a few relics but was lucky enough to get an E-Trac when first released and had a fair amount of time to use and learn it, Ray.
