My local dealer has several detectors - different manufacturers and the models - all displayed for potential buyers - and if one decides on one, the dealer gets that one model new in the box and will usually open it in front of the customer (unless the customer doesn't want it open), and then ensure every item is accounted for that should be in the box. Then the warranty information is checked, and if the customer wants, the dealer will fill it out and mail it for the customer. Then if the customer wants, the dealer will assemble it, install batteries, then check that the operation is as should be - to include the shafts don't squeak, displays, buttons, knobs, headphone jack etc are all properly operational. Then (I have seen this - I don't ask myself), will work with them one on one the operation of the detector. He is also known to go out with customers to actually hunt. If one wants headphones, he works with you there. He has pouch's, diggers etc.
I called him once and he was out detecting. He said to come on out and gave me directions. After I got there, he placed a new introduced to the market detector in my hands. Then worked with me on it. I liked it, then asked if he had any new in the box. I have bought probably nearly 10 detectors from this guy in the past couple years. Of course I had been reading up on it for that week since it was something new (Whites Vision) and was interested. Well I ended up buying one, then we went hunting at a different place. He wanted me to know what he knew since he got his.
Sometimes it is nice to just drop by, say hi and ask what's new - well, pull up a chair - that's how it usually goes.
In all my years of detecting, I am fortunate to have such a dealer near me, not only for detectors, but all the accessories and support.
